Modern Schooling

How does technology impact education?

"The internet, like the steam engine, is a technological breakthrough that changed the world forever."

Over the past 20 years, there has been a drastic change in the learning environment and how high schools and colleges function due to advances in technology. These innovations in technology have had a significant impact on education by giving students more options for schooling and classes that they can enroll in. Today, public school is no longer the only option for a source of education; online schools and private schools have become widely popular mainly due to the introduction of technology into education.

Online School Makes It Easy!

Students in high school or college do not even have to attend a physical school with new innovations in online schools. One of the biggest advantages that this type of schooling has is that it gives students much more freedom to focus on what they want to with their careers long term. "Online courses provide students everywhere, even in remote locations, opportunities for a customized curriculum and advanced placement courses." (Williams). This type of schooling offers a much more flexible schedule and with the Internet being widely available, students can do their schoolwork from almost anywhere. "Hardware and software advances, like the laptop, allow online school students to be free to move around and not tethered down to a desktop." (Williams). With programs like Skype and Face Time, students can even have a live videoconference with their teacher or tutor from halfway across the world! Online schooling is a perfect alternative and can be a key tool for students to get ahead of their age and narrow down their classes to focus on their future.

Computers For College!

Technology has changed the college education environment drastically in the past decade. "Email has changed the student-professor relationship." (Weir). Almost every student in college has an email, and this breakthrough in technology has made it much easier for students to stay in contact with their professors when they are absent or even if they just have a question about something. Laptops have become a necessity for college life to have easy internet access and also to help keep students neat and organized with papers, homework, power points, etc. "A survey in 2004 showed that students spent 15.1 hours on the internet per week, a 15% increase from the students who were interviewed just one year earlier during fall 2003." (Weir). The Internet plays a key role in education because it is a primary and reliable resource for essays and assignments. These many different advances have changed not only how college students and professors operate, but high school students and teachers as well.

High school, high technology

Public schools are beginning to introduce technology earlier and earlier, however it starts to become a major factor in high school. "One of the most notable changes in the classroom is the gradual, but steady change from textbooks, to e-books or digital books." (Gale). Byron Nelson High School is one of the many schools that have started using net books as a resource for books and materials necessary for class. "With the use of word and other Microsoft products, teachers and students can increase productivity in their lesson plans, projects, etc." (Williams). Easy access to the Internet and Microsoft products allows students to turn in assignments online, take notes, research, and keep all of their work organized on one computer instead of several books and binders. Technology has made the high school learning environment more entertaining and effective for students than it has ever been.

Technology changed how we live

Although technology has a few minor downsides like problems with cheating and the occasional malfunction, the pros largely outweigh the cons. It is clear that technology has changed the way our world works today and it will only continue to improve. Elbert Hubbard once said, "One machine can do the work of fifty ordinary men. No machine can do the work of one extraordinary man." For now technology is a great tool for education, however future generations could struggle with being too dependent on it, sometimes it is good to do things the old fashioned way.
