Ironmen Athletics
Boy’s Basketball- From the tip on Friday night, both Bessemer (15-7) and Cherryville (10-13) came out with great energy to start the game. The first quarter was a battle that ended with the teams tied 13 all going into the second. But in the second quarter, Cherryville began to pull away with a late run in the second to push a small lead to 9 going into the half. The Third quarter, much like the second also saw a run from the Ironmen pushing the lead as far as 16 points. Going into the fourth Cherryville held a 12 point lead that was cut to 2 points late in the fourth quarter by a Bessemer City run, However the Ironmen were able to make a few plays in the final minutes of the game, including two long inbounds passes to Taveon Hardin for layups from Matt Cain to put the game out of reach for Bessemer City. The game ended 83-75 with the Ironmen on top.
The Ironmen also picked up wins Tuesday the 31st against Sugar creek and Tuesday the 7th against Thomas Jefferson respectively. Dating Violence Month
February is dating violence awareness month. February 8-12th is when people wear orange to support healthy relationships. Dating violence is most common among teens, its controlling and abusive. There are several types of violence abuse between mental and physical. Mental dating violence is many ways including, blackmailing, calling names and turn people self conscious. Physical dating violence includes actual physical contact, hitting, punching and kicking. Both of these abuses are a cause of depression.
If you are involved in an abusive relationship with someone, you should seek help about it. Because the advice they will give you can be very helpful. If you know of someone this is happening to, please get help and talk to them about it. A high school survey was taken at random and 2 out of every 10 students have been in a abusive relationship. Most needed help getting out of it but didn't know how. One way to get help is to seek therapy, you can talk to any teacher or guidance counselor at your school. After you are out of the dating violence you can keep yourself busy with school activities or other interests or hobbies so that way you won't think about it.

School Counseling Week
School Counseling week is a week that highlights the tremendous impact of the counselors and what they do for the students. School counselors are very important to all schools. Without counselors the students would have nowhere to go when they need help or have any problems at school or at home. Counselors can also help with planning ahead for your career. School counselors impacted students lives every day. Mrs. Eaker is a school counselor here at Cherryville High and she said “I love coming here everyday and seeing the students I also enjoy being there for you all when things are not good in your life or when you just want to talk.” School counselors are certified professional educators who work as an integral part of a total educational team to provide support services that enhance student achievement.
Thank you Mrs. Eaker, Ms. Foster, and Mrs. White for all the work you do for CHS.

History of Valentine's Day
Lovey dovey kissing romance - that is what everyone knows Valentines day as, but things are not also as they seem. Valentine's Day is celebrated on February the 14th, bu in the times of the Romans Valentine’s Day was know as the Feast of Lupercalia and was celebrated from February the 13th to February the 15th . During the feast the men would sacrifice a goat and a dog and then whip the women with the hides of the animals the just killed. During the festive the would drink and be naked . The young women would line up to get whipped because they believed this would make them fertile. This feast would also include a matchmaking lottery where the men would draw the name of a women from a jar and they would pair up for the feast or forever if the match was right.
In 3 AD Emperor Claudius II had banned marriages, believing married men made bad soldiers. Saint Valentine thought this was unfair and arranged marriages in secret.
When Claudius found out, Valentine was thrown in jail and given a death sentence. In prison, he fell in love with the daughter of the jailer and when he was taken to be killed on February 14 he sent her a love letter signed “from your Valentine”. In the 5th century Pope Gelasius made this a Christian holiday. Later on, Shakspeare then romanticized it to make it what we now know today as a lovey dovey kissing holiday.

Man On The Street
How’s your new semester?
Avery W.:
Interesting, it is nothing like middle school which is good. I’m in some hardcore classes but I can handle them even though I am participating with sports for the school.
Maddy H.:
Very challening. I’m so packed with so much work with little amount of time.
Allison R.:
Awful, because AP Gov. is difficult and Math 3 should not be for Sophomores.
Emily B.:
Soild, because the days go by pretty fast and I get all my homework done in class.
Skylar M.:
Hard, I’m always piled up with homework. I barley have time to do it because of the activites I am involved with school. On game days I get home late and all I want to do is take a shower, eat dinner..etc and go to bed.
Austin T.:
Easy, I have Advanced P.E, Teacher Cadet, Human Geography AP with Powers and then a CCP class.
Sydney N.:
Challening but nothing I cannot handle. Very challening with all the sports I’m participating in.
Matt C.:
Good and easy! Times goes by pretty quick. When I get to school it is 8am but in 2 minutes it is already time to get out of school.
Emma P.:
Good, it can be very challening at some points but I can handle. I just have to make sure I don’t miss any days of school so that way I don’t fall behind. I have 3 core classes so my schedule can be a bit tight, but I manage to keep up.
