The Wonderful World of Woodbury

Weekly Update for Families: January 23rd

Updates & Friendly Reminders

Family Reading Night is coming up on February 9th! We hope to see you there! We love hearing our students come to share with us how they are sharing our book, Dragons in a Bag, and their stories of reading together with family each day. Thank you! Missed a chapter, chapters 1-4 are below!

We are still in the thick of benchmarking our students. We are so encouraged by the overall progress our students have made from fall to winter. Thank you for supporting your child and encouraging them at home. Every little bit helps!

We had a our monthly visit with the Fox Valley Therapy Dogs this week again. We continue to be so thankful for this opportunity.

Don't forget to check out the celebrations and district news below.

Interested in volunteering at Woodbury? At times we are in need of extra helping hands during our lunch and recess times to help both inside and outside and as we plan some upcoming events for our students. Lunch takes place between the hours of 11:30-12:30. Please email Mrs. Kern at jkern@sandwich430.org if you are interested. A volunteer form and background check are required. Thank you for your help!

As we make our way into 2023, one theme I’m hearing a lot is wanting to make positive changes to an individual’s mental health. The last few years have been challenging to say the least with all the constant changes. This has required us to be willing to adapt at any given moment. It has not been easy on our minds and bodies! One mental health strategy you can incorporate into your day is mindfulness. Check out this website for examples and more information. https://www.mindful.org/

In the classrooms we are still talking heavily about kindness, empathy, and friendships. In third grade, we are talking about how empathy is understanding how others are feelinging and kindness is doing something about it. All students have been doing a great job of identifying acts of kindness for others by thinking about how another person feels and thinking about what they might want or need. We have talked about ways kindness can make our existing friendships even stronger as well as build new friendships. I love working at Woodbury because I see so many kind acts and hear so many kind words everyday from our students and staff!

In case you missed it! One School, One Book!

Mr. Sodaro helps the Sandwich Elementary Schools kick off their 2023 "One School, One Book" program by reading chapter one of this year's selection, Dragons in a Bag by Zetta Elliott. We hope that all families enjoy spending time together and reading. If you are unable to do so, check out the Sandwich 430 Facebook page for daily links of our chapters being read. The program will take a little over two weeks, with trivia and scavenger hunts, culminating with reading nights at our schools. Check your child's school social media accounts frequently for updates and information. Thank you for celebrating with us! Happy Reading!

Yay, I Showed the Woodbury Way!

Empathy is knowing how someone else is feeling, even when you aren't in the same situation. It's being able to to "put yourself in someone's shoes" and see things from their view. Empathy is a great step toward having positive relationships with others because it helps us understand and relate to others. The students below were recognized for showing empathy in their classroom and with peers. We are proud of them for helping us make Woodbury a positive and supportive place to learn and grow!

2023 Sandwich Education Foundation Casino Night

The Sandwich Education Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization formed in 1994 to enhance the educational opportunities for the students of Sandwich C.U.S.D. #430. The Board of Trustees is made up of parents, teachers, and local business owners who volunteer their time to help support and enrich our schools.

Our biggest fundraiser this year is our Casino Night and Silent Auction, which will be held on April 15, 2023, at the Fox Valley Older Adults Community Center in Sandwich. Doors open at 6:00 and the casino games will open from 7:00-10:00. At the event, you will be able to test your luck on popular casino games like craps, roulette, and blackjack. Don’t worry you won’t be playing for real money so you can take a risk and bet big to help our students. We will also have dealers on hand to help teach games to our less experienced guests. Appetizers will be served and there will also be a silent auction and raffles. This event is always a fun night and a great way to support our schools. Tickets are $25 each and are available in the main office of each school or online by clicking this link.
