her mother was also a poet. she had two brothers and one sister. one of her brothers was a poet and the other two where writers. she was home schooled. in 1843 her father became ill and could barely see. he lived another eleven years. at 14 she had a nervous breakdown and left school. she got engaged to James collinson. the engagement failed in 1850. she was engaged two more times but refused each time. in 1849 she got very sick. in 1842 she started writing poems. she wrote her first poem when she was eighteen. from 1859 to 1870 she was involved in charity work for St. Mary's. she was also opposed to slavery at the time. in 1859 she wrote "the face of the deep". in 1893 she got breast cancer and died if graves dieasae on December 29, 1894. graves disease is autoimmune disease where the thyroid enlarges twice its size or even more. some of the symptoms are increased heartbeat, muscle weakness, disturbed sleep. it also can affect the eyes, causing bludging eyes.
