Thornhill Elementary PFC Newsletter
Volume 26, Issue 9, October 2, 2018
From the Principal
Dear Thunderbird Families,
I hope you are all well. Today we had our first rain of the school year! It's always nice to see the seasons change at school. Nestled among the trees, Thornhill always seems to be surrounded by green.
This past week our 3rd through 5th graders were treated to a ukulele performance and workshop. You can see that in the photo below, along with Mrs. Townsend joining her class in African drumming class. It is such a joy to see our students taking on new instruments.
Every now and then students ask to have lunch with the principal...and yes I take them up on the offer. I always take the opportunity to get to know our students better and give them a chance to get to know me. We often have fun just conversing and sharing our identities and languages in our families together. Or looking through the Thornhill year book, especially in the ‘50s. Recently, 4th graders had lunch with me (see pic below). I had so much fun in these 20 minutes.
A few reminders:
No School: Friday, October 19
Fall Sweep: Saturday, October 20
Walkathon: Saturday, November 3
Have a wonderful week,
Census Day on Wednesday - Tomorrow!
Wednesday October 3 is Census Day for OUSD—the district will count every student attending school and collect information that will help determine the amount of money our district receives through the Local Control Funding Formula. So like every day, unless your student is ill, please make sure they attend school tomorrow.
Reducing Waste at the Walkathon
The Sustainability Team is on a mission to reduce waste at Thornhill events, and we’re starting with some specific requests ahead of the Walkathon on Saturday, November 3.
Prizes: Is your closet the land of forgotten goody bag toys? The sustainability team can relate and wants to help you to help us repurpose these toys to reduce plastic waste. To this end, instead of purchasing new dollar store toys for the walkathon give-aways, we would like to collect from your toy graveyard and re-distribute to our superstar walkers at the event. We welcome all donations, please bring them to the bin that will be in the school lobby October 2-30.
Utensils: (To the tune of Silver Bells) Silverware....silverware...soon it will be Walkathon. The sustainability team is aiming to avoid the use of plastic utensils at this year's Walkathon BBQ. We want Thornhill to have it's very own cutlery collection that it can reuse for these types of events...this year, next year, and in ten years. We are collecting old cutlery that will find its forever home servicing the hungry mouths at Thornhill events. Please bring your second-string cutlery to the bin labeled "silverware donations" that will be in the school lobby October 2-30.
Thank you from the Sustainability Team!
Back to School Donation Drive
We are extending the Back to School Donation Drive by one week. Together, our community has raised $154,000, which is tremendous! Thank you so much to the families who have participated already. However, we are still $36,000 from our goal, and 50% of families haven't participated. If you haven't given, please consider doing so. A gift of any amount ($50? we’ll take it!) helps us get closer to our goal and supports our amazing school.
We want to continue the tradition of excellent education that has been a hallmark of Thornhill Elementary for the past 60 years. From our amazing teachers and staff to the programs like P.E., music, art and computers, it is the support of our community that makes this possible.
More information and ways to give at thornhillschool.org/donation-drive. Don't forget, our thank you gift this year is a cool Thornhill hat and your donation is tax-deductible.
Donate to Thornhill Just by Shopping/Eating!
