Mrs. Waller's BHS Vocal Ens. Class

Class Assignments week of 3/30/2020 - 4/3/2020

Hang in there, kiddos!!! We're all rooting for you and your success! Now, onto what to do...

You have new vocal warm-ups this week. There are 2. They need to be done daily to keep flexibility and range in your voice. If you get sick, rest your voice for 2-3 days and try singing lightly. DRINK LOTS OF WATER. It's allergy-season, so vocal cords dry out quickly.

1. Remember the number exercises in class that were super challenging for some of you? I want you to try those this week. Remember, they go:

Your voice goes up and down with the NUMERIC solfege as you sing. Try to go as high and as low as you can from 1-8 and back down. Try a different key. Don't ever go past 8. If you get to 8, the numbers will be:

If you can't get to 8, no big deal. Go as high as you can with your numbers one day and slowly add another number the next day. It takes a lot of concentration and focus, but eventually you'll get the hang of it.

2. Remember the "jumping off a building and landing in a swimming pool" exercise? Let me refresh your memory. You pretend you're jumping off a building or out of a plane and you're going to "Ahhhhhh" all the way down until you hit the swimming pool at the bottom. This is a great exercise to keep that voice warmed up and strengthen high notes. *EXTRA CHALLENGE: At the bottom, imagine a TRAMPOLINE and bounce back up to the top of the building or into the plane while reversing your "Ahhhhh" from low to high. Try it. :)

Ready for a little bit more fun? No? Too bad. :)

Alright, you're listening to another video this week, but you're going to answer reflective questions about what you see/hear. You can write your answers out, take a recording of yourself answering the questions, or send me a voice recording of you answering the questions. Anyway you answer them, please send to

Reflection questions:

A. Which style of singing did you think was the most interesting? Why?

B. If you HAD to try one of these types of singing without anyone listening to you (not even me), which one would you go for and why?

C. How do you think these singers produce these weird types of singing? Do you think they're born with these talents and just know? Do you think they work hard to be able to sing like they do? Do you believe they play around with their voices until they figure out weird ways to sing?

D. Do you know of anyone else that can sing in a strange way? They can be famous or not.

E. Can YOU do anything strange with your voice that you can describe in words? Would you be willing to record it and let me listen?
