Homework
Hopefully by now you have seen the students' book baggies. The students should read every night for at least 15 minutes. They may read the book they chose to bring home or one they have at home already. Later this week, the students will also be bringing home sight word flash cards. They should practice these nightly as well.
Robert Frost Library Checkout Days
The students will be going to the LRC to check out books on Day 4, 5, or 6 (depending on their special group).
Math Update
The first graders have been comparing three objects and putting them in order from shortest to longest. Next, we will be measuring objects with non-standard units of measurement (unifix cubes, centimeter cubes, and paper clips).
The end of the year expectation for first graders is to be able to count and recognize numbers from 0 - 120, as well as to show the value for each numeral. We are starting with the numerals 0 - 20 in September.
Reading Update
We have been focusing on building a community of readers in Reader's Workshop. The students have learned that there are three ways to read a book (reading the words, the pictures, or retelling a story they already heard). They have also checked out books from our classroom library, and started "Read to Self". The first graders are working on building up their stamina. Currently, our goal is to focus on their silent reading for 3 minutes.
Writing Update
The students have been working hard in Writer's Workshop! The students received their writing journals and folders and learned how writers think, draw, label, write, and add details when they are composing a new piece of writing. The students also learned that writers say, "When you're done, you've just begun!" Now they know that when they finish a piece of writing, they need to go back and add details to a previous piece of work, or they need to start a new piece without checking with me first. This will allow me to conference with individual or small groups of students.
