LETS GET READY TO TRANSITION
Counselors will be meeting with students to prepare for next school year. 6th & 7th Grade students will be receiving lessons on completing course request forms during the week of January 24, 2022. Students can find course request forms in XELLO, CANVAS, or on the Counseling Services Website. 8th Grade students will begin meeting with the high schools during the second week in February, so being in attendance is very important. For additional information contact your child's school counselor at 972-262-1934.
DRUG PREVENTION & INTERVENTION
Spot the Signs of Student Drug Use
As counselors and social workers, we know most of our students very well. We know their demeanor, their temperament, and a lot of times how they react to certain situations. When there is a shift in any of these variables, we will more than likely notice, but may not understand what is causing the shift. When students begin using drugs or alcohol, their behavior may change. Below, you will find some possible warning signs of adolescent alcohol and drug use/misuse.
- Withdrawn
- Frequently tired and/or depressed
- Hostile
- A change in friend group
- Decline in academic performance
- Missing class or skipping school
- Deteriorating relationships with family/friends
If you notice any of these signs, even if it is not related to drugs or alcohol, have a conversation with your student. Give them that safe space that you so expertly provide. If you do suspect drugs or alcohol, refer them to the GPISD Drug Prevention & Intervention team by completing a referral form located on the counseling website.

Goal Setting Tips for Students
Tip #1: Set realistic goals. Decide what you want to achieve academically, socially or personally, and write down the steps you need to reach your goal. Aim high, but keep it simple so it is achievable for you. Remember to celebrate the small accomplishments along the way to reaching your goal.
Tip #2: Break up your routine and do something fun or different one day. Although our routines are comfortable, a little change of pace can perk up your day. Plan a trip with friends, take a walk in a different park or hang some new pictures in your room.
