What's Up in the Classroom?

Math - We started a tough concept last week. Adding decade numbers onto other numbers. I've been surprised at how well many of the students have picked it up. Some are still struggling but we will be practicing more this week as well so there will be lots of time for me to work with them. An example of this type of problem is 46 + 40. Students could use a number chart to count over 4 tens or they could add the 4 with the 4 to get 8 and the 6 with the 0 to get 6 for a total of 86. Either way is fantastic as long as they arrived at the correct number.

Reading - The majority of last week was focused on finding the setting of a story. Students did REALLY well with this concept. From there, we started studying the sequence of a story. This concept proved to be a bit trickier but we will continue to practice it this week. Students have to hit the main points of what is happening by saying, "First....., then...., next...., finally." This is something they must be able to do with a fiction and nonfiction text.

Writing - We spent time last week reviewing the writing environment. Students also decided on a piece from their writing that they thought was their best. They reviewed and edited it with another student in the class and will share it with their 5th grade buddy (who they haven't met yet.... This is a new experience that will happen towards the end of February).

Science - Matter was on the agenda again last week. We focused on a couple of videos to solidify the concept of solids, liquids and gases. This week, we will discover how one state changes into another.

Spelling - I'm really glad we kept the same spelling words for a second week. The extra practice time proved beneficial as evidenced by the spelling tests. We are moving on this week to a new concept. Students will review with me on Monday and then practice throughout the week. Please practice with them at home as there will be a new sort in their reading book bag on Monday.
