Mar Vista Parent Newsletter
Week of January 11, 2021
Dear Families,
Happy New Year and welcome back to school! I hope you all had a good break and were able to spend valuable time with your family. Just a reminder that Monday is a professional development day for teachers. School resumes for distance learning on Tuesday, January 12 for all students and our packet distribution will resume on Tuesday as well from 8-10 and 3-5. Distribution will also take place on Tuesday, January 19 due to the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on Monday, January 18.
Good news! We will have two Picture Days on Monday, January 25 for TK-2nd grade students and Monday, February 1st for grades 3-6. Siblings may attend either date. Photos will be taken outdoors with COVID-19 protocols in place. More information will be sent to you with details on procedures for the picture days. Please look for it next week in your email.
Street access to the school from Soquel Dr. is currently impacted due to a public works project. Cars traveling north on Soquel will not be able to turn left into the driveway and must continue to Cabrillo College Drive and make a U-turn. Access from Soquel Dr. for southbound traffic is not impacted, however the center turn lane and left lanes are closed. If visiting the school, please make sure to give yourself a little extra time in case of traffic due to the road work.
I am looking forward to seeing the students' smiling faces next week and getting the calendar year off to a strong start at Mar Vista!
Wishing you a wonderful weekend and great week to come!
Stephanie Monroe
Mr. J's Academic Coordinator Update
Hi Families,
Happy new year! I hope you all had a nice holiday and were able to enjoy some family time.
Students will be continuing Unit 4 in our language arts curriculum, Benchmark, this week. This unit generally focuses on narrative stories and how perspectives/points of view shape these stories.
The science fair looks quite a bit different this year, and due to the structure of distance learning, it is not being required for 4th-6th graders. It is still encouraged for those students wishing to participate, and they can still submit their projects directly to the county fair this year. You can find more information about that here: https://ca-scc.zfairs.com/?f=760d2abd-97bf-4923-871c-a48fb3af0565
Please note, the deadline for registration is March 1st.
We will have science fair boards for anyone that wishes to participate, please just reach out to me and we can set something up.

They purchased Zearn for us and I have to say it has been a HUGE support for my math program. I also appreciate the $400 classroom funds because I have been purchasing chapter book sets for my class. I also really appreciate Ashley continuing on being treasurer with her full time job. -Miss Risa

PVUSD School Meals - 2021
Meal Distribution Jan 12 - 29, 2021: We want to acknowledge with deep gratitude the support of our community’s food pantries that ensure our families have access to food. Our meal distribution at 14 of our school sites will resume on Tuesday, January 12. Here is the flyer with schedule details. https://tinyurl.com/y2z7fq7p
As a reminder, PVUSD now has two afternoon meal pick up locations to support those families who are not able to access meals during earlier meal pick up times. Please note that families can pick up meals for their children for the seven days of the week on the one pick up day. Also, Second Harvest Food Bank distributes groceries during most weeks during these afternoon meal pick up times.
