The Principal's Post
Happy New Year!
I hope each family is staying healthy and safe.
At Ridgeview, we have been winding down the first semester of the school year. All students have been encouraged to finish the second grading period strong and begin to prepare for the second half of the school year, which begins January 20th.
As a mindful school, it is imperative that all students come to school with a calm body, a focused mind, and be ready to learn.
Also, I am asking that each parent/guardian review our PBIS Behavior expectations. These expectations are available on our website, in our student handbook, and were sent home earlier this year. Adherence to the expectations is a must at Ridgeview to ensure an orderly and productive learning environment.
Families also should review with their children the importance of appropriate mask wearing, social distancing, and hand washing protocols as we continue to promote the health and safety of both the students and staff at Ridgeview.
Be Well,
Natalie M. James, Principal
Academics Announces New Extended Learning Initiative
Starting January 8 and extending through May 14, Academic Services will host monthly extended learning opportunities at various host sites in the city through its new Pathway Express program.
Every weekend leading up to the 2022 Summer Experience, Pathway Express gives PreK-12 students and families free admission to host sites such as the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) and the Columbus Museum of Art, as well as at-home learning activities designed to stimulate your child’s mind and make learning fun.
Academic Services is also partnering with Family & Community Engagement and community organizations to provide a variety of family support services every second Saturday of the month throughout Pathway Express.
We Want Your Feedback -Complete the Survey Today!
Columbus City Schools (CCS) value feedback from families, and we would like to learn more about your child’s school experience this year. CCS is collecting responses for a Family-School Relationships Survey to learn how we can better support our community during the rest of the school year and beyond.
Parents and guardians, please take 10-15 minutes to complete the Family-School Relationships Survey. You can complete this survey between January 10th and January 28th.
Families with children at more than one school should complete one survey for their oldest child in each school.

OELPA Preparation
The OELPA is required for all English learners in addition to Ohio's State Test.
Practice sessions conducted by Ridgeview teachers are being conducted this year from
January 31 - March 25.
Each student has an OELPA Practice Folder with resources to help them prepare for the assessments. In addition, students who are completing the practice items are being recognized during daily announcements and receiving prizes.
Academics - 8th Grade Science
The 8th Grade Science classes are digging into the interior of the Earth. Students will learn about what kind of energy is inside the earth and how it creates changes on the surface such as: volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis. Also, students will learn that the landforms we see have been created by these events. In addition, students will learn:
- Earthquakes happen all over the world every day.
- Volcanoes are erupting and creating islands all the time.
- Tsunamis are building in the oceans due to plate movement.
These are just a few of the interesting topics students will learn about during the remainder of the second nine weeks and into the third nine weeks.

On behalf of the Student Leadership Council, thank you for your participation and help with the Candy Cane Sale.
It was so successful that multiple trips were made to get more candy canes to meet the demand ... which was a great problem to have!
We made over $500 so we will be able to make a lot of blankets for

Vaping & Social Media's Impact on Our Students
Now is the time to take a moment to talk to your student.
“Tweens” are at an age that can be perplexing--for them and us--as they try to navigate the waters of remote and in-person learning; friendships and BFFs; peer pressure and bullying; wanting privacy, yet seeking your affection, all as they try to profess their independence.
Our middle-schoolers need our—RMS staff and parents/guardian—as much now and maybe even more than when they were younger. So "now" is always a good time to take a moment to listen and share with your child.
Click on the pictures below and discuss these topics with your student.

RMS Choir Concert
Last month, the Ridgeview Middle School Choir Concert had a performance. Listed below are three songs and a little about the origin of the song.
“Swingle Bells” is the traditional holiday song “Jingle Bells” arranged in a Jazz style. Several standard Jazz techniques have been used in this arrangement such as anticipation and singing swung 8th notes.
"Sleigh Ride" is a holiday class composed by Leroy Anderson. The composer formed the original idea for the piece during a heat wave in July 1946, and finished the work in February 1948. The original recordings were instrumental versions. The lyrics, about riding in a sleigh and other fun wintertime activities, were written by Mitchell Parish in 1950.
“Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening,” one of Robert Frost’s most well-known poems, was published in his collection called New Hampshire in 1923. This poem illustrates many of the qualities most characteristic of Frost, including the attention to natural detail, the relationship between humans and nature. The melody of this piece is based on the traditional English Folk Song “The Water is Wide” here to see a view of the performance.
RMS Instrumental Concert
Congratulations to all the musicians on a fantastic performance!
The One & Only Middle School Bell Choir at CCS
A talented group of girls and boys performed at aa lunchtime concert for the sixth graders.
Students in this group who are enrolled in Mrs. Chomos' music survey class started the year with little to no music experience but have learned to read music and are successfully playing in an ensemble. As a member of a handbell choir, students must work together because each of their parts is like a small section of keyboard or piano. To make music, ringers must listen and cooperate so that the notes are played in time.
Congratulations to all the performers who put on a fabulous show!

From Our Counselor
These are exciting times as we get our 8th graders prepared to enter high school.
RMS wants to make sure that you and your student understand all that is needed to create a smooth transition from middle school to high school.
Here’s the pertinent information that will be detailed in an upcoming meeting:
- Every single RMS student is currently assigned a high school based on your address; however, there is a process for which you can submit your student’s name to attend three (3) other high school options. It is important to note that this information must be submitted via the Parent Portal (not the student’s portal).
- If you missed the Zoom meeting on Thursday, January 13th, click here to learn more about School Choice General Information 2022-2023 and view the school profile.
- Current Schools and Courses (it should be noted, all 8th graders have and continue to have the opportunity to take high school classes)
- Graduation Requirements
- Selective Admission
- Lottery for Schools (ends on February 28, 2022).
- Career Centers
I'm looking forwarding to working with you to create a successful transition to high school for your child.
