NSSD MIDDLE SCHOOL ATHLETICS UPDATE
September 22, 2021
I’m excited to announce that middle school athletics is well underway! It is incredible to go outside after school and see our cross country runners heading to the woods, our football teams going through drills, our soccer teams training, and hearing the squeaks of sneakers from our volleyball team in the gym. It’s a busy time of year, but it’s SO worth it!
Our cross country team has been competing and our volleyball team went to their first game last night! Last night was the first night in almost two years where I was able to climb onto a bus and stress the importance and responsibility of representing our wonderful communities to a group of middle school kids. It was so great to see them nod their heads and begin to understand the meaning and privilege of being a student-athlete.
With all of that being said, it is important for ALL of our parents to know the challenges I am facing as it relates to making sure games are taking place. Every team in our league is facing the same challenges that I am. Here are some things that we are facing as a league:
Inability to provide schools with bussing to get them to games
Short-handed referee associations
Low participation levels
Inability to reschedule games due to referee availability
Our league has been incredibly busy trying to make our fall sports season successful. I’m asking for your flexibility and understanding as games get canceled or rescheduled. We are looking at every option to make sure that games get played, but sometimes that just will not happen. Please know that we are trying to make the best out of a very difficult situation. However, having our students on the courts and fields for the first time in 19 months improving their athletic skills in knowledge is a huge priority, even if that means cancelation of games and more practices.
As games get canceled, we will communicate with all of our middle schools and request that a Blackboard blast be sent out. One of the easiest ways to get real-time updates for athletics is by downloading and subscribing to Stayton Middle School’s app even if your student does not attend Stayton Middle School. Additionally, all of our schedule changes and updates will be posted on our Stayton Middle School Sports Facebook page and the Stayton Middle School athletics page on our website.
Thank you again for your patience as we navigate our athletics through some very difficult times. Your support for our student-athletes is greatly appreciated!
