The Westmoreland Wrap Up
September 15, 2023
Start with Hello
Back to School Night, 9/19
The night offers two IDENTICAL K-4 sessions. This schedule was devised with the hope of accommodating parents of children across multiple grade levels, or perhaps siblings or twins in the same grade level with different teachers.
You will be able to attend one teacher's session from 6:30-7:00 and the second teacher's session from 7:00-7:30.
Specialists' sessions overlap. This will enable you to stop in and meet a specialist or two before or after a homeroom session.
Any questions, please contact Mrs. Dell'Aglio at any time.
Information regarding the CogAT Screener
In the coming weeks, the CogAT Screener will be administered to any students in grade 2-4 who are new to the Fair Lawn School District. The CogAT Screener consists of verbal/picture analogies, number analogies, and figure matrices. Data gathered from this assessment will enable us to plan effective programs for our students and make decisions regarding academically talented programs. The screener takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.

Smart Watches and Cell Phones
However; we also understand the safety features these devices can provide in an emergency as well as the importance of parents being able to contact their children and/or track their location. As I am sure you will understand, we need to hold certain expectations and outline specific rules when it comes to cell phones, smart watches and their proper use in our school building. It is expected that during the school day, students cell phones are off or on silent mode in students' backpacks. These items are not to be used during recess time or during school hours.
With regard to smart watches, we also recognize that some parents provide their children with smart watches for the same safety reasons as mentioned above. During the school day students are not permitted to use their watch for calling, messaging, texting, surfing the net or taking photos except in the case of a real emergency. (Forgetting homework or lunch box does not constitute a real emergency.)Smart watches may be worn except during standardized testing.
Parents can help us enforce these expectations by not texting or calling their children on these devices during the school day. If a parent needs to contact their child during the school day, please call our school's main office (201)794-5490. If you must speak to your child regarding an emergency, we will certainly put them on the phone with you. If there is no emergency, any message will be relayed promptly.
It is recommended that parents make sure childrens' watches are set on silent mode during the school day to avoid disruptions to the classroom. If a student uses a smart watch for anything besides checking the time, we will need to meet with you and revisit whether the watch can be worn in school.
Thank you for your understanding.
Please feel free to reach out to me with any additional questions or concerns,
