TO GIVE IS TO RECEIVE
FOCUS SCHOOL VALUE FOR 2023: RESPECT
Our community values an attitude of caring deeply about people and treating them with dignity. We care about ourselves and the world around us. Respect is evident when:
• we treat others as we want to be treated
• we express feelings in a peaceful way
• we speak courteously to everyone
• we bring honour to ourselves, our families and our school
• we recognise the achievements of each person
• we build positive relationships
• we show equal justice and fairness
Palm Sunday Prayer
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Carers,
Palm Sunday
This Sunday is Palm Sunday. Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, and commemorates the triumphant arrival of Christ in Jerusalem, days before he was crucified. During Palm Sunday Mass, palms are distributed to parishioners who carry them into church. The palms are blessed and often fashioned into small crosses as a symbolic reminder to welcome Jesus into our hearts and to show our willingness to follow him.
Cricket Carnival
On Tuesday, our Year 6 students participated in the inter-school cricket carnival. The staff reported that the students had a fantastic day and represented our school with pride. Results and photos are below. Thank-you to Tayla Lake for coordinating and Nick Brooke and Bonnie Lynch their support of the students.
First Aid Sessions
This week, all classes attended a First Aid Session, presented by St John of God. St John Ambulance Australia is committed to promoting the importance of first aid in the community. These sessions were interactive and pitched at the appropriate developmental level from Kindergarten to Year 6. It is a fantastic initiative by St John of God to provide this learning opportunity to schools. Thank-you to Lynda Packer for coordinating this incursion.
Make a Move
Final preparations are underway for the Make a Move concerts next week. Each class will get the opportunity to view the dress rehearsal of their year level peers in the other class. Please see below for the costume information and refer to the Seesaw announcement for logistical information.
Playgroup
We have already had some families sign up for our Playgroup Meet and Greet session on Monday 1st May. A representative from Playgroup WA will host the session. The playgroup will serve our families, the families of the parish and beyond to the local area, with children from birth to three years. Please share the flyer below.
Quality Catholic Education School Review
This week, we hosted a panel appointed by Catholic Education WA for our Quality Catholic Education School Review. This has been an opportunity to share the story of our School Improvement journey at Orana. There were many positives to celebrate and opportunities to drive our journey forward. The panel recognised many whole school achievements. Below is a snapshot presented under the four pillars of Quality Catholic Education. More information will be shared once the formal report is received.
Catholic Identity
Embedding the meaning of the school motto and crest in daily school life.
Enhancing the awareness and visibility of the School Houses and the significant Catholic identities; Salvado, Ward, Francis and MacKillop.
Education
Undertaking the process to review and update the Orana Vision for Learning and the Learning Principles, “Challenge, Engage and Connect”.
Community
Nurturing strong connections with students, parents and the parish community.
Stewardship
Extensive sustainability program to promote the responsibility of all to care for the earth, now and into the future.
Thank-you to the students, staff and parent leaders from the Advisory Council and the P and F Executive for their time and input into the school review.
Kindy and Pre-Kindy Enrolments 2024
Kindy and Pre-Kindy interviews for 2024 will commence early next term. If you have a child who is due to begin Kindy or Pre-Kindy in 2024, please ensure your application has been received by the school office. Applications for 2025 are also now open for both Pre-Kindy and Kindergarten. Please contact Deb Goodwin, our Enrolment Officer (9376 8300 or admin@orana.wa.edu.au)
Stations of the Cross
Tonight, the Year 4 students will lead the Stations of the Cross at the St John and Paul Parish at 7pm. Everyone is invited to attend.
I am out of the school next week as I have been called to serve on jury duty. Thank-you to Kathryn Alp; she will lead the school in my absence.
Best wishes and God bless.

Faith in Action
Project Compassion
Each class has received a Project Compassion box. Project Compassion is run by Caritas the Catholic Church's charity organisation. The money raised is to help people throughout the world, particularly in developing countries, who are poor and need assistance. Project Compassion is something we do over Lent. Students are encouraged to donate money to their class box. Instead of buying an ice cream or treat they may wish to donate that money. They may want to do extra jobs at home to earn money to put into the Project Compassion Box. We will be collecting all Project Compassion boxes on Tuesday 4th April and the Social Justice Team will announce on Wednesday or Thursday which class raised the most money.

Homeless Food Service
We would like to sincerely thank all our wonderful volunteers that helped make this Homelessness We Care Food Service be a huge success. The 'community approach' of having staff and parents involved to help make something very special happen was a joy to see!
Our Super Salad Making Team did a fantastic job and managed to make 150 roast chicken salads that Orana students and staff had raised money to purchase ingredients for. 180 delicious sandwiches were made and donated by parents also. Chocolate Easter Eggs were also donated and thoroughly appreciated by our homeless friends in Perth. We received so many smiles, gratitude and hundreds of 'thank-yous' so it was truly appreciated.
Next term, we are hoping to have this beautiful community approach of our Homelessness We Care Service involve the students in the preparation of care packs, also.
Next Food Service Tuesday 26th of May (Hot meals and care packs).
Thank you

SOCIAL WORKER NEWS
3 Thinking Skills Kids Need to Thrive
Although scientists can’t agree (because it’s difficult to measure), it’s estimated we have around 70,000 to 80,000 thoughts a day. The majority of these thoughts come and go without us paying much attention to them, many we don’t really notice. When we do notice thoughts that are left of centre, weird, judgemental, unkind or are generally useless we tend to be able to let most of them go too. But then there are those thoughts that stick. These are the ones that, if we buy into them, influence how we feel and what we do next. Or what we begin to avoid.
Kind Regards
