Scheduling For 2018-19
The course request process is now complete. Counselors have mailed home information on the scheduling process as well as a list of courses that your child selected with the counselor (grades 8-11). Please note that changes can be made until April 11th. After this date counselors will be unable to make changes until later in the summer. If you have any questions about a course(s) please contact your child's current counselor.
Junior To Do List
It is hard to believe, but this school year is quickly coming to an end. Juniors, this means that it is time for you to think more seriously about life after high school. There are several tasks that students and parents can do now to better prepare for senior year.
1. Have an honest conversation about life after high school. Entering college immediately after high school is not for everyone. In some cases, a student may wish to take a gap year, enter the military or seek an apprenticeship opportunity.
2. If you are college bound then March-August is a perfect time to narrow down your list of possible colleges to 8-10 schools. When considering what schools to add to your short-list, consider all aspects of the college environment. Examine everything from dining hall options, dorm life, geographic region, major, college selectivity, and extra-curricular activities. The college you select and it's surrounding community will become your new "home" so you want to research and visit schools on your short-list.
Remember that you can use Naviance to help you search for schools. You can also compare your test scores and GPA to former North Shore students to get an idea of how competitive you are. If you don't know how to do this, see your counselor.
3. Sit down and figure out when you will take the necessary standardized testing. Don't forget to research your colleges to see if they require SAT II results. The writing center offers assistance with SAT prep so be sure to read their flyer below.
4. The Common Application is used by a lot of colleges and you can complete most of the application as well as the essay over the summer. Yes, you can get started now. Learn how to complete and save your application for future use at: http://www.commonapp.org/rollover
What Are Safe, Target And Reach Schools?
As you narrow your list of colleges down, it is a good idea to have 2 to 3 schools in each of the following categories: safety schools, reach schools; or target schools.
Safe schools are colleges that you will almost certainly get into because your test scores and GPA are well above the average for admitted students. These schools also have fairly high acceptance rates.
A reach school is one where your academic credentials fall below the school's range for average freshman. These are long shots, but they could still be possible.
Target schools are ones in which your academic credentials make you competitive for admission. Your GPA and test scores rank within the average range for that school and you have a very good chance of acceptance.
