Fifth Grade PEAK
Mrs. Turner's PEAK Class October News
Curricular Areas:
5th grade students are in the process of selecting a brain topic to research. Students will select a note taking method to help them engage with the reading material.
Math:
5th graders will use math (and some science as well) to solve word problems. These "brain boggling" problems will also connect directly to our Theme study. The four mathematic/scientific concepts we have explored thus far include:
#1 Math and Science will Tell You the Truth
#2 Counterintuitive Thinking
#3 Occam's Razor
#4 Mistakes and Frustrations are part of the learning process
Each concept is introduced through a slideshow. Next students solve problems within the concept taught and then fill out a reflection on the type of problems they solved.
Topic Study:
5th graders will continue to work on their topic study research. Most students will wrap up note taking this month. They will then create a short video to share their learning. We are also examining vocabulary that makes us an expert in our topic.

Our Schedule:
Schedule Reminders:
Personal Growth and Development
- Optimist vs. Pessimist
- Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic
- Introvert vs. Extrovert
- Left brain vs. Right brain
After each test students reflect in their journal. What do the results say? Do they agree with the results? Can they give an example to support the findings of the test?
2. Grit - We are exploring the word GRIT - what makes some individuals more successful than others? Studies show, GRIT is often the key to success.
Quote from noted Psychologist and Researcher, Angela Duckworth: “Grit is perseverance and passion for long-term goals. Grit entails working strenuously toward challenges, maintaining both effort and interest over years and years—despite failure, adversity, and even just stalls in progress. The gritty individual approaches achievement as a marathon; his advantage is stamina. Whereas disappointment or boredom signals to others that it is time to change trajectory and cut losses, the gritty individual stays the course.”
