Background Information
The Venus Flytrap is a carnivorous plant native to subtropical wetlands on the east coast of the United States in North Carolina and South Carolina. They trap insects by their hairs on the inner part of the plant, when an insect touches one of these hairs the plant traps it, but it only tries to trap something when the hairs are triggered twice to prevent it from closing on something else like the wind or dust.
Endangerment
n 2015, there were estimated to be fewer than 33,000 plants in nature, all within 120 kilometers of the city of Wilmington, North Carolina. Even though venus flytraps are often sold at many places around the world, it has an extremely limited wild range: about 120Km.
The plants mainly grow in bogs and many of their habitats have been lost to development over the past century.
Protection
It is now a felony to steal venus flytraps and is punishable by 25 to 39 months in jail.
Since Venus Flytraps are very easy to grow in captivity, extinction may not happen.
