WORD FROM THE EMERALD CITY

~ Shout out to Tammie for being an AMAZING counselor!! We are so incredibly lucky to have her at Elkins, and she does SO MUCH for the kids each and every day! Happy School Counselor's Week, Tammie!

~ Also, we want to give a huge shout out to the front office ladies and Lilly for helping Angie and Ashley complete the literacy library. Amy, Diana, Laura, and Nancy all helped to bag books and make labels. Lilly helped with her decorating expertise to make the room have some final touches!! Thanks so much to you guys and again to Angie and Ashley for all of their hard work! If you haven't been by to check out the new room, make sure to stop in and see the workable and usable space!! They worked hard to create an environment that is user friendly and all in one location!

~ Fifth grade and fourth grade completed their first round of benchmarks! Their kiddos did great, and I'm very proud of the results, and the teachers should be too! Shout out to everyone who helps our kiddos each day! You all are amazing, and it shows when we have data that supports it! Great job, and keep up the good work!

~ Today is the last day for teacher of the year nominations. I will be giving the nominated teachers the "self reflection" sheet to fill out. if you are a teacher who has not been here the full 3 years, I'm looking for you to help serve on the committee! Please email or message me if you're interested. I will also be putting the forms for Para, Auxiliary, and Professional of the Year in your boxes. These are simply a quick vote. The same rules apply to be eligible, you must have been in the district for 3 full year. I will list the names on the back, just as I did for the teacher of the year.

~ I will be sending out a form to get a rough estimate of people for Dads with Donuts next Friday. Forms should be in your boxes in the next day or so. Please send home with students and ask them to RSVP, so we can ensure we have enough donuts for everyone! Thanks!!

~ The EMS-ISD book drive begins this week! If we collect the most books, we will get money to purchase new mentor texts! Encourage your student to bring in new or gently used books. Also, let's all do some spring cleaning and see if we have any we could bring in to donate! You should have boxes in your room! We can always get more if needed!! Thanks!!

Campus News

~Encourage your students to sell the chocolate! This is our biggest fundraiser, and we want PTA to make as much money as possible!

~ STAAR/TELPAS training is today in the library. All staff must attend the STAAR training. If you are not at teacher, you will able to leave once we begin TELPAS.

~ This Friday, we will have the Valentine's parties. We will be on CLUB SCHEDULE since the parties will begin at 1:50. Make sure you make note of the schedule difference.

~We will have the spirit rally with the Boswell basketball team on Friday morning at 8:30! This will be a great way to show our school spirit and help support Boswell. Remember, all of our students now feed into Bos, so we are a true feeder school!

~ Make sure you have given Lilly your Elk of the Month forms, so we can have all of those hung up and displayed!!

~ For February, we will be focusing on the life principles of common sense, courage, self-discipline, and service. I will begin announcing them tomorrow during morning announcements. These are the traits to be used when looking for your February elks of the month!

~ We will be having a movie night on February 24th. This will be sponsored by our Elk Junior Council. We will be showing the movie, the Wizard of Oz! Invitations will be going out this week with details. There will be a concession stand selling pizza, baked goods, and drinks that will also be sponsored by Elk Junior Council. We do want to stress to students that this IS NOT a drop off and leave event. If students come, they must have a parent/guardian stay with them.

~ Makerspace is finished other than setting up supplies!! Woo-Hoo!!! Thanks SO much to Amarisa and her husband for finishing the framing this weekend. We will get it arranged and set up this week, and a schedule will be coming out soon of when your students will be able to attend!! Christine and I will get with PTA this week to organize the supplies, get bins for storage, and get everything arranged!

~ Mr. Newcom emailed me back, and he has been swamped (tax season), so we are looking to set up a date for him to come in the spring. I will let you know once a day has been finalized!

Be Vocabulous!

Continue to discuss the vocabulary with your students! It's making a big difference!

Here is the copy of the s'more newsletter about the vocabulary program. It has all the words listed for the year, so you can plan ahead! It has each word listed and the grade level responsible. The kids really enjoyed this last year, and I think this was something I had more comments from parents about than anything! They would comment about their students knowing the meanings of words that they didn't even know. The vocabulary parade was a big hit too. Even the older kids got into it and had fun being creative and participating.

Please turn in the "Word Up" Levels sheets when you have students who display the appropriate use of the words. Obviously, the younger they are, the more "adaptation" needs to occur in order to receive the levels, but the students who received the tags last year, LOVED it!! I will put the "Word Up Level" sheet on canvas!

As a reminder, the way the "Word Up Levels" work, goes like this...

All students will start as rookies and all students will have a chance to move up as many levels as they would like. Spirit Tags (that PTA is selling) will be used for levels 2 thru 5 and when a student reaches level 2 thru 5 they will receive a spirit tag for that level from the principal.

Teachers will nominate students to move up through the levels.
