Dairy Foods and Osteoporosis
By: Grant Delka
Dairy Food Group
The dairy food group is important because it is our main source of calcium and other minerals it takes for our body to grow and develop. Also it provides protein for our muscles.
Osteoporosis is a disease that weakens bone structure and causes the bones to lose calcium. This allows the bones to break more easily. It can effect anyone and any age, but it can be prevented. You can prevent it by getting your daily recommended value of calcium and Vitamin D, engage in a weight bearing lifestyle, and avoid smoking and excessive use of alcohol.
Some healthy food choices may include: Milk of any variety, cheeses of any kind, yogurt, pudding, or cream soups. Those aren't the only things you can eat though. You can try incorporating dairy foods into meals.
With these recipes you can not only get your dairy food group, but you can get others, like grains or proteins
Other Calcium Rich Foods
Collard greens, broccoli, kale, edamame, bok choy, figs, oranges, sardines, canned salmon, white beans, okra, tofu, and almonds. These all not only have calcium, but other important nutrients and vitamins your body needs.
