Newsletter Week 6 Term 1
Shelly Park School - Tuesday 8th of March 2022
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Parents and Whānau
Well, we are now half way through the term. In what, I can only describe as challenging times, I am pleased that our students have been able to participate in some school events again. The swimming sports event was great, all students gave it a go and there were some amazing results throughout the day. It was such a shame that we could not have a live audience, but I hope some of you were able to watch your children on the live stream video.
Our next event will be the SPS Triathlon. Remember to purchase your Weetbix Tryathlon shirts from Kindo. We have extended the time to do this until the 13th of March. If for some reason the event cannot go ahead on April 1st, we will reschedule it for later in the year.
As I mentioned in my message at the end of last week, our attendance rates, considering all that is going on around us, have remained reasonably high. While the vast majority of our students are attending school and we have staff healthy and able to teach, we will continue on with face to face learning. Wouldn't it be amazing if we were able to get through a whole school year with no closures!
A reminder that on Monday the 28th of March we will be having a Teacher Only Day, school will be closed. Recently, the Ministry has moved the goal posts on staff appraisal and how we continue to make sure all our staff are growing and learning as professionals. I want our staff to be the best teachers for our students and I feel it's important that appraisal is valued and done well. With this in mind, we will be running professional learning on the day and giving appraisees and appraisers time to meet and discuss goals, areas of strength and areas of improvement. Thank you for your understanding around this.
Lastly, a special thank you to Jamie Austin and has family for donating 24 bottles of hand sanitiser/cleaner to the school. This is such a generous gift, great work Jamie.

Yummy Stickers
Shelly Park has again registered to collect the Yummy Apple stickers. These stickers are converted into a winning share of the $200,000 sports prize pool from DG Sport. All you have to do is purchase ‘Yummy’ branded apples, save the stickers or cut out labels, place them on a sticker collection sheet and return them to your classroom teacher. The apples can be purchased from New World, Pak n Save and participating Four Square stores.
The Yummy Apple Sticker Promotion officially runs for Terms 2 and 3, however if you have been collecting since last year, these stickers still count too. If you need more Sticker Collection Sheets or Cut out label collection sheets they will be available at the Office or with your classroom teacher. Please return all completed Collection sheets to your classroom teacher or hold onto these sheets until the end of Term 3 for collection - we will let you know!
Entertainment Book
Thank you to those who have recently purchased an entertainment book. The PTA truly does appreciate the extra funds that the school gains from each purchase. All memberships last 12 months from the date of purchase.
Every membership sold gives 20% back to our school! Please support our school with this fundraiser, and share this link with family, friends and work colleagues. Use this link to find out more! https://nz.entdigital.net/orderbooks/954z61

Board Of Trustees
Voluntary School Donation and Activity Contribution
As always, to meet the demands of running our school effectively and to the standard expected of us, we rely on the additional funding provided by parents through voluntary donations. We must stress the word ‘voluntary’ as we cannot mandate these payments, nor can we mandate the Activity Contribution or even school camp contributions. However, what is certain, is that without these additional funds, activities could not go ahead, we would need to reduce the number of teacher aides, reduce the upgrade of equipment and furniture, and school camp would cease to be.
Education might be ‘free’ in New Zealand, but all the added extras aren’t and as we are a Decile 10 school, we do not qualify for the Ministry of Education's donation scheme that covers Decile 1-7schools.
The Board of Trustees has set the contribution (including the Activity Contribution) at $320.00 per child ($640 for 2, and $815 for 3 children) again this year. We appeal to you to consider making this payment. This total contribution qualifies for tax relief under the Donation rebate. Contributions can be made via Kindo.
We recognise that for many families and particularly for those with more than one child at school, this can be a financial burden and if you would like to make a contribution in instalments, we welcome your approach to set this up.
School Camp
With camp for the seniors now being postponed until August, there is more time to save for the camp contribution of $300. If you have already paid this, thank you. The school can simply not afford to fund a large proportion of students and if insufficient contributions are received the camp may not be able to go ahead.
Financial Hardship
We are aware that the events of last couple of years and currently has changed the financial
landscape for many, and if this means that you may not be able to cover the cost of school donations or camp, please talk to us. We do have some funds set aside for cases of financial hardship, but equally we need to be aware of these to be able to gauge the overall situation. Please contact BOT@shellypark.school.nz if this applies to you.
As previously advised, we will be posting out statements next week for donations and school wide activities. These can be paid via Kindo.
Thank you for your support.
