Fire and Earthquake Drills in Voc. Ed

In our classroom, we have been practicing fire and earthquake drills in order to become comfortable and familiar with school wide emergency response procedures. Last week we simulated an earthquake in our classroom by opening and closing drawers, cabinets, and shaking backpack bins. Students volunteered taking turns simulating an earthquake to embrace the experience. The result, our class was a mess! Students reflected on how much noise an earthquake can make, emotions provoked because of it, as well as the aftermath of a chaotic, messy room. Students also executed the safety steps in response to an earthquake, carefully navigating through our messy classroom.

I've asked our class to discuss their experience with their parents as well as their home emergency preparedness plan. Several resources are available to help all of our families prepare for an earthquake. The American Red Cross has outstanding materials. You can obtain Red Cross materials from their website: Check out our short video clip and pictures below!
