Pikesville High Newsletter | November 2018
From Principal Reid's Desk
Greetings Pikesville High Family,
Happy Autumn! Our exciting school year is well underway and chock full of enriching school-wide events!! Recently, our underclassmen engaged in PSAT Day while our seniors partook of Panther Prep Day with volunteers from all walks of life to assisting them in preparing to be more globally competitive.
Thank you for supporting our recent Pop’s Concert, Powder Puff Football game, Parent-Teacher Conference Night, and other school outreach events. Additionally, we are so very grateful to our families who are coming out to cheer our student athletes in the numerous fall sports being played this year. It has been exciting to see “Panther Pride” radiate throughout our school. We just ended a very unifying Spirit Week that culminated in an electrifying Pep Rally, Homecoming Game, and an unprecedented large number of our Panthers enjoying Homecoming Dance. During Red Ribbon Week, our students pledged to be respectful and not bully others. This week, we will be increasing our awareness of cancer and honoring the many survivors and the memory of those who have lost their battle with it.
Know that we are elated to have the opportunity to expose your child(ren) to this wide array of learning and enrichment opportunities offered here at PHS.
We duly recognize your dedication to our school community through your parental involvement. Thank you to the many of you who have already joined our PTSA (it is not too late)! We are thrilled for the additional school-related programs that will benefit our students due to this collective effort. Remember to look on our website for the PTSA’s monthly meeting dates and times. I look forward to seeing you there.
Our diligent educators have strategically designed academic opportunities to ensure that students are learning every day, in every class, and in substantive ways. Students are getting acclimated with their varied curricula responsibilities and are adjusting to the rigors of their content standards and our school-wide initiatives that serve to raise the learning bar and close any existing achievement gaps, if applicable.
GRADE REPORTING
The first quarter ends on Friday, November 9th, and report cards will be distributed on Monday, November 26th, so look out for them. Throughout the course of each quarter, and the year, we strongly encourage you to access your BCPS One account to stay abreast of your child’s performance in classes and connected to his/her teachers. We welcome you to speak not only with educators, but with our counselors and administrators, regarding questions/concerns you may have so that we can properly service your child’s specific needs.
We are celebrating all students who made the first quarter Honor Roll with a token gift given to us courtesy of the PSTA. Our STRAIGHT A Breakfast will be held on November 30th for students who achieved this tremendous feat as well as their parents.
SAVE THE DATE - AMERICAN EDUCATION WEEK
Our ABSOLUTE favorite time to showcase ALL we do on a regular basis for students is soon coming!! American Education Week will take place the week of November 12th. Whether for a brief visit, or the entire day, we are eager to have you spend quality time visiting your child’s classes. The schedule for the week is in the calendar below.

PASTRIES FOR PARENTS
I look forward to hosting a quarterly outreach with you, our important stakeholders, entitled “Pastries for Parents”! Our first will take place on Monday, November 12th at 7:10 a.m. in the Administrative Conference Room. It will be a great opportunity to meet and discuss programs, initiatives, make inquiries and suggestions, as well as obtain clarification regarding our service to students and our learning community. Mark your calendars and join me on November 12th for lite fare and an informative bonding session.
FALL PLAY
We look forward to seeing you on November 15th – November 17th at 7:00 p.m. for PHS’ Pikesville Player’s production of Steel Magnolias. Our thespians and budding actors/performers eager to showcase their talent for you at this highly anticipated fall event.
PROUD TO SAY
CONGRATS to our very own NURSE MERANI, who was selected as the State Nurse of the Year for the state of Maryland! PHS is immensely proud of her and her endless contributions to our students and learning community!
DECA is recruiting local business leaders to be judges at our regional event. Please consider serving the school community in this way. Read more here.
We would not be deemed a premiere BCPS high school without your expressed and tangible support. A heartfelt “thank you” for keeping connected and intricately involved. As we move together in harmony and focused on the academic success of ALL our deserving students, we will obtain the momentum to propel us to realize appropriately high levels of school progress and productivity.
Yours in Education,

Purchase Your Tix for Steel Magnolias!
Performances are scheduled for Thursday, November 15th thru Saturday, November 17th at 7:30pm in the PHS auditorium. Steel Magnolias is directed and produced by Theatre Arts teacher, Doug Kotula, with technical direction by Tedd Wilson. “Magnolias,” written as a tribute to the strength of Harling’s sister, his mother, and the small group of women who supported them, is Kotula and Wilson’s 27th collaboration at PHS.
Mr. Harling wrote Steel Magnolias months after his sister, Susan (Shelby), died of complications from diabetes. The original production broke records at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in Manhattan, where it ran almost three years. Less than a year into the play’s run, the legendary producer Ray Stark bought the film rights, and in 1988 it was made into a movie starring Sally Field and Julia Roberts as the mother/daughter characters, M’Lynn and Shelby. The Pikesville Players’ production stars Jessica Karmiol (Truvy), Jordan Layman (Clairee), Olivia Clay (Shelby), Tyasia McClinton (M’Lynn), Starr Blackwell (Ouiser) and newcomer, Aliyah Moore (Annelle). For more information, or to reserve your tickets, call 443-809-1217 and ask for Mr. Kotula.

DATING? Parents be like: "Yikes!" Teens be like: "Oh yeah!"
The best way for our teens to learn about trust, judgement, sexual safety, self-respect and how to be physically safe, is from open conversations without judgement with their parents and caregivers. Check out this article and use it as a springboard to open up the lines of communication. Conversations can be uncomfortable, but if you keep pushing through it gets easier, and the reward is huge. The more comfortable this conversation becomes at home, the better prepared teens are with their friends and those they may date.

Yearbook News
Portraits
The second round of senior portraits will be taken on December 10 and 11 from 2:30-9:00pm. Students who have not had a portrait taken will receive an appointment card from Lifetouch Photographers approximately 2 weeks before the portrait dates. If you wish to have your portrait taken at the Lifetouch studio instead, call 410-644-7700 for an appointment. All portraits must be taken by December 31 to be included in the yearbook.
Yearbooks
All 2018 yearbooks have not been picked up yet. If you ordered a 2018 yearbook please have your child stop by room 128 to pick it up. If you did not order one, we still have a few available for $70.
It’s time to order your 2019 yearbook.
You can click on the yearbook icon on the pikesvillehs.bcps.org website or go straight to jostensyearbooks.com and search for Pikesville High School. This year’s book is looking amazing and you don’t want to miss out on it. Because we include every event up to and including graduation, books are mailed to seniors in July and distributed to underclassmen the first week of school in 2019.
Yearbook Ads
Parents of seniors, consider recognizing your graduate with a baby ad in the yearbook. Forms were mailed home in September, but you can download one from the parent page of the school website. You can also email rleiby@bcps.org and she will email you a form.
Do you own a business in the community or provide a service to the community. Consider purchasing a business ad in the yearbook. The book is seen by many people for decades to come. You can download the business ad form from the parent page of the school website.
Pikesville High School Vision
Pikesville High, the heartbeat of our culturally-diverse community, is where pride in our work, and honor for ourselves and others, combine to ensure success in cultivating our globally-competitive students.
