Family Handbook Reminders to Keep You Informed
Why is Halloween Not Celebrated at Ocean Avenue Elementary School?
We haven't ever celebrated Halloween at Ocean Avenue Elementary School. Here is why we made this decision back in 2011.
- For some families this is a religious holiday. We want all of our families to feel respected and included at our school.
- Some costumes are realistically scary. This certainly causes some of our younger students to be frightened, which we always try to avoid at OAES.
- As students dress up in costume, we also lose the day for academics. We only have students for 176 students days, we want them all for teaching and learning.
Students are required, by law, to be at school. We do not want to create an atmosphere of being excluded. This is also why we do not celebrate other religious holidays during the school day. Clubs and Rec after school, are allowed to celebrate any holidays. After school events are not compulsory for any student.
Please Note: Students absent from school to observe religious holidays will be excused.
Family Handbook Reminders
A portion of the above reminder was taken from Ocean Avenue Elementary School's Family Handbook 2019-2020. We hope to provide you with snippets from the handbook to inform you of the policies and procedures at Ocean Avenue Elementary School. Our goal is to improve on communicating information and procedures out to parents, and to ensure that parents know school protocols. We are happy to receive feedback from you on what you want to know and the best way to communicate it. If you have any ideas, please share with the Main Office.
