The Cavalier Chronicle
April 2016
President's Message
Dear Members:
2016 is well on its way. We have already held our first specialty with the Cherokee Rose Cluster. Our judge in January was breed expert Erica Venier. We will hold our 2nd October Specialty on the Friday before the Kennesaw Kennel Club shows. This year we plan to have a back to back show Starting the day with Judge Alex Bubb – Alex was the top breeder in the UK in 2015. She also bred GB CH Wandris Entertainer “CC record holder” He earned 37 CC (of that 34 BOB) and till today 1337 points scored at Championship Shows, the 2nd show of the day will be puppy sweeps judged by our own Missy Crane – Signature Cavaliers, after lunch we will have Judge Linda Hurlebaus (AKC) finish up the days judging; Linda had Cavaliers before they were registered with AKC. The night will end with a nice dinner and small live auction – one of the items that we plan to auction off is a small trinket box hand painted by Cavalier Breeder and Artist Betty Turner. Please mark your calendars to attend this exciting event!
Last weekend we held a puppy picnic at Linda Whitmire’s “field of dreams”. We moved the event from November to the spring. The weather was beautiful and it was great to catch up with friends old and new. If you missed this year please mark your calendar for next year – we will share the 2017 date in the next few weeks. This year’s picnic consists of a member match, puppy training, and fun classes. We continue to have our annual heart and eye clinics – this is a great opportunity for you to get your dog’s heath checks performed. And as I always say the best thing about owning these wonderful dogs is all of our friends that we have met along our Cavalier Journey.
I want to say a special think you to Bart and Linda Whitmire for allowing us to use their land for our annual puppy picnic – year after year! I also want to give big thank you to Ken Bess for setting up our Sound System and staying to the end to help us break down all the tents and pack everything up for next year.
I hope everyone plans to support our specialty with their time, donations (if you have something for the silent or live auction please contact me at 706-342-3292 / Playerscav@aol.com) and entries.
Information about our meetings, speakers, and events for all our functions can be found on the Website at http://www.ckcscatlanta.org.

Puppy Picnic Spring 2016
Written by member Sharon Utych
Our first Spring Puppy Picnic was held on Sunday April 24, 2016. The weather was beautiful! It was low humidity with a light breeze. We had a great attendance of club members, cavalier pet people and cavalier pet people from the Atlanta Cavalier Meetup Group. Our special guest was Mr. Eric and his dog Abby, along with one of the most famous cavalier biscuit makers around...Mr. Oliver Bentley himself of Oliver Bentley Biscuit fame! Ollie B (as he affectionately known), had brought everyone a treat bag filled with his wonderful biscuit bites and he also got to see his “grandma” again and meet some of his kin! Ollie B was bred by Alice Alford (Monticello) and he met his half brothers Winston and Spencer and got to give his grandma Alice kisses!
At the picnic, we had AKC Canine Good Citizen testing performed by club member Alice Alford and we had a HUGE graduating class of FIVE cavaliers (see pic!)! Two were club member cavaliers – Sharon Utych & Linda Whitmire’s Almeara Visionnaire (Stevie) and Claire Ellis’ Winston are now AKC Canine Good Citizens along with three other cavaliers from the Atlanta Cavalier Meetup Group.
Our games and contests were loads of fun! We watched Zeke take the fastest biscuit eater contest in one gulp, Stevie ran the cone weave in just under 10 seconds along with having the biggest roundest eyes, Jamie and Edgar tied for the Best Kissers and Winston had THE LONGEST EARS EVER!
We held our heart & eye health clinics where we 21 heart exams and 14 eye exams!
Our Member’s Fun Match was held at the Puppy Picnic with Mimi Hodges (Mimric US) judging the 16 cavaliers entered.
The results were:
Best in Breed/Winners Dog – Brookhaven The Dream Lives On (Utych)
Best of Opposite/Winners Bitch – Jayba Booty (Lander)
Reserve Winners Dog – Brookhaven Bob Bailey (Schilling)
Reserve Winners Bitch – Brookhaven Suzie-Q (Ayers/Martz)
We also had a Junior Showmanship entry - Club member Hollis & Carol Land's grandson took their dog Jamie around the ring like a PRO!
A huge THANK YOU goes out to club member Linda Whitmire who graciously puts on this huge event on her property each year. A lot of hard prep work and clean up go into putting on an event of this size and her and her husband Bart’s efforts are very much appreciated!

Allprovide’s Co-Owner Michael McVay – April Speaker
If you missed attending our April meeting, you missed a great speaker and discussion on canine diets. Michael is the co-owner of the local company, Allprovide (www.allprovide.com) which manufactures raw and gently cooked diets for dogs & cats. In addition to making food, Allprovide sells bones and a special formulated weaning paste.
Michael explained how , when living in the UK, his dog Maggie had severe scratching and ear issues and Michael began to research the food he was feeding Maggie. He found that in the UK there was not options for raw diets and decided to produce his own food (Michael is a chef in his own right). The Nutriment Raw Dog Food Company was born through this journey to produce a quality raw diet.
Now back in the States, Michael wanted to bring the Nutriment Raw Dog concept here. Located in Norcross GA, Allprovide produces the same high quality food as is being done in the UK.
Michael explained the breeder program to the club and a discussion on the benefits of Allprovide’s weaning paste. He then showed us Allprovide’s new line of “gently cooked” diets and provided generous samples for all of us to take home and try. He also invited our members to visit the factory in Norcross for a tour and visit to the factory store. You can check out Allprovide’s website for retailers near you or you can order online and they will ship to your door!
May Meeting
Our next regular meeting will be held on Tuesday May 3rd. Social hour is at 7pm where you can order off the “Burger Theory” menu and the meeting will begin at 7:30pm. Our May speaker will be Dr. Rebecca Kestle, DVM and the topic of discussion is reproduction. Please be sure to join us for this meeting and bring your questions for Dr. Kestle!

The Book Nook: Sophie-The Incredible True Story of the Castaway Dog
By Emma Pearse
336 pages; Da Capo Press
Sophie, a 3-year-old Australian cattle dog, was beloved by the Griffith family for her sweet, companionable nature. After falling overboard on a holiday boating trip, Sophie somehow managed to navigate the treacherous, predator-infested waters of the Great Barrier Reef; she washed up on the shore of a wildlife reserve and used her canine instincts to get by on a tiny island populated by goats, birds and butterflies. This loyal-to-the-end loner continually spurned well-meaning advances from the island's human caretakers, presumably holding out for rescue by her owners—for more than four long months. Journalist Emma Pearse pieces together Sophie's harrowing ordeal from interviews with family members and island locals and tenderly describes the effect the dog's disappearance had on the heartbroken Griffiths. For dog owners who have ever gazed into the adoring eyes of their pet and felt like there were no bounds to what this creature would do for them...well, in affirming the unbreakable bond between humans and dogs, this book will confirm that hunch.
