Our Learning
The workshops for Reading, Writing and Math are being established. The district wide workshop model includes whole group mini lessons, small guided groups and application time for practice. The kids are doing a great job getting in these routines.
Literacy:
Our first unit in reading will focus on community, integrating social studies and literacy. We are in the process of learning about various communities around the world and what impacts them! "What impacts a community?" is the question we will be returning to throughout the unit. This will support writing in which we will investigate more about a topic we are familiar with and write an informational text.
Fifth Grade Math
The classes are finishing up on the last section of Unit 1 with the learning of Powers of Ten.
- Learning about exponents
- Multiplying and Dividing with Powers of 10
Next week 5th grade will be finishing Unit 1 and starting Unit 2 which focuses on number operations of whole numbers and decimals.
The SDW Parent Math Site has been updated. This is a very comprehensive Kgn. through fifth grade site, so be sure to take a few minutes to view it.

School Counselor, Mrs. Edwards
This month the School Counseling Social & Emotional Learning (SEL) lesson addressed bully prevention techniques. These include when to approach an adult, use of I-messages and assertiveness skills. Students worked to identify behaviors that constitute bully behavior, how to handle these situations and when to seek assistance. The school counselor provides an activity done in class to further learning. Ask your student about this activity and the things they’ve learned from it.
October is Bully Prevention Month that aligns with our monthly counseling lessons. Your school counselors put together a few activities for this month:
**Monday October 5th- Wear Blue to support Bully Prevention. Share your support at #BlueUp #SDWBlueUP and share the message of being an Upsander.
**Wednesday October 21st- Wear Orange for National Unity Day. See the National Unity Day Guide for Schools
