Hello FUSD Staff and Community,
I know I’m not alone in feeling strained by all that is going on. In a typical school year, now is when the days feel long with not enough daylight, spring break is still far off in the distance, and established routines suddenly need reinforcement and adjustment. This year, countless other difficulties are added on top.
I can’t guarantee easier days around the next bend, but I do know that our students, our employees and our community will meet every challenge. We will find common ground, and from there we will rise. Our educational community is strong, and we grow stronger through our shared decision-making, our pursuit of common goals, and our successes.
This week we’re acknowledging our school counselors as part of National School Counseling Week. Our counselors provide vital services to our schools, students and families. These professionals help students develop language to describe their social-emotional needs and express themselves effectively and constructively. The services they provide are especially important this year with the return from distance learning. I thank each of our counselors for their contributions, and all of our employees for the work they do in support of our students' social-emotional health and growth.
Thank you all for your continued support for our students, staff and schools.
Masking Requirement
FUSD continues to require face coverings both indoors and outdoors for all adults and students at all times while on campus, except while actively eating or drinking, or while in a private office or alone in a classroom.
This week the California Department of Public Health announced changes to statewide guidance that will take effect on February 16. It revises the current statewide mask mandate to require universal masking only in specified settings, including indoors in TK-12 school settings. Workplaces continue to follow COVID-19 prevention standards set by CalOSHA.
We expect the Governor and/or California Department of Public Health to make announcements regarding masking in schools soon. FUSD will continue to analyze any recommended guidance changes for schools and students as issued, while considering alignment with CalOSHA mandates for employees/employers. FUSD will keep our community updated on any changes.
Residency Verification
FUSD requires proof of residency each school year. Starting this year, residency verification will be included in FUSD’s Maze Day process in the summer; it will NOT be required in February/March as in past years.
Please note, parents/guardians must notify their student’s school WITHIN 5 SCHOOL DAYS of changes to a student’s address. Click here to view more information on change of residency.
K-12 Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Curriculums
The Curriculum & Instruction Dept. (C&I) has completed a review process and selected two social emotional learning (SEL) curriculums for use in kindergarten through 12th grade. This adoption will be brought to the Board for approval this Spring 2022 and implemented in schools starting next school year 2022-23.
C&I invites families to review the materials and share feedback through this feedback form. Feedback will be accepted until March 8, 2022.
Grades K-5: Second Step lessons in English - digital program
- Sample parent letters - Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Spanish
- Sample K-5 Spanish lesson plan and student handout
C&I has an Initiatives Dashboard that provides at-a-glance project information and status.
Volunteer Policy
At its February 9 meeting, FUSD’s Board of Education voted to allow volunteers on campus in alignment with all prior (pre-pandemic) regulations and guidelines for volunteering on campus, with the following additional requirements:
Proof of vaccination as defined by ACPH/CDPH,
Completion of symptom screener by volunteer in school office, and
No more than one volunteer in a classroom at a time.
This change will be reflected in our COVID-19 District Safety Plan, and will go into effect in the coming weeks, after we have operational processes in place to verify vaccination status for volunteers.
We will update our staff and community when changes go into effect, and volunteer opportunities will be offered at the discretion of each school.
FUSD will re-evaluate this policy in April to determine if more/less restrictions may be needed.
No School February 21 for Presidents’ Day
Please note that all FUSD schools and offices will be closed on Monday, February 21 for Presidents’ Day.
