Integration of the Arts
High Levels of Student Engagement and Inquiry
Parents,
We, as a district, have moved to implement the Science of Reading for our approach to literacy. During your conference with your child's teacher, you will see that we will focus on Lexile levels. Each week I will provide you with more resources and information so that you can continue to support your scholar at home. The science of reading is a vast, interdisciplinary body of scientifically-based research about reading and issues related to reading and writing.
This research has been conducted over the last five decades across the world, and it is derived from thousands of studies conducted in multiple languages. The science of reading has culminated in a preponderance of evidence to inform how proficient reading and writing develop; why some have difficulty; and how we can most effectively assess and teach and, therefore, improve student outcomes through the prevention of and intervention of reading difficulties.

Red Ribbon Week
Red Ribbon Week began in 1985 as a tribute to Enrique Camarena, a fallen Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent. Red Ribbon Week is an alcohol, tobacco, and other drug and violence prevention awareness campaign observed annually in October in the United States and is the nation’s largest and longest-running drug awareness and prevention program.
This year Red Ribbon Week is October 23 – 31, and the theme is: "Celebrate Life. Live Drug-Free". Everyone is asked to participate in a spirit week to celebrate our choice to be drug-free.
Monday: Proud to Be Drug-Free! Wear red to help kick off Red Ribbon Week!
Tuesday: Peace Out to Drugs! Wear tie-dye shirts or shirts with peace signs.
Wednesday: Team Up Against Drugs! Wear your favorite sports shirt or jersey.
Thursday: Lei Off Drugs! Wear a lei or Hawaiian-type shirt.
Friday: Our School Chooses to Be Drug-Free! Wear your school spirit wear or school colors.
Calendar Options Feedback
Dear North Metro Academy Family,
In Gwinnett County Public Schools (CPS), we aim to create a school calendar that fosters student achievement while at the same time meeting the needs of our students, families, and communities. We design our school calendar around requirements codified in state law (180 school days for students and 190 days for teachers). In addition, staff and community preferences drive the various breaks throughout the school year.
While it is still early in this school year, we are seeking your valuable input and feedback on the calendar options for the 2023-24 school year. The calendar options were built based on feedback we have received from students, staff, families, and our community from previous school calendars. In these options, you will find an option that is very similar to the current 2022-23 calendar, as well as options with different features like the removal of staggered start days, the removal of some or all digital learning days, and the addition of holidays that are inclusive of the rich diversity we have here in Gwinnett County.
Please complete this NMAPA form.
