Be the Masterpiece: Choose Kind
If ever there was a book that made this year’s theme (We are ALL God’s Masterpiece) come to life it is, When God Made You, by Matthew Paul Turner. Because it is fitting to our theme, this was the first, “Principal’s Pick” chosen to read to every class. There were many connections made about how each child is truly a masterpiece, created by God in His image, inherently loved and valued. In the picture below is an excerpt from Matthew Turner that articulates this message.
We encourage peace and empathy-building daily as we remember to see the masterpiece in one another. In our world where it can be very easy and quick to see what’s wrong, we are working hard at Saint John XXIII to see the good in one another, to see the masterpiece and choose kind. Empowering our children to choose kind is how we will build bridges, create a peaceful world, and battle bullying, intolerance, and injustice. Our School Spirit team shared a daily kindness challenge this week. Today’s kindness challenge was:
“Give out at least 20 high fives to people who you don’t usually talk to. You might be walking down the hallway and see someone from another grade. Stick your hand out and with a smile-give them a high five!”
Saint John XXIII reminds us in his Daily Decalogue: “I want to be kind, today and always, to everyone.” Imagine our world if we could all accept a daily kindness challenge and choose to see the masterpiece in one another.

School Fees: Field Trips & Presentations
School fees letters went out this week. Elk Island Catholic Schools continue to make an effort to reduce the cost of basic education for all students by covering the cost of school supplies. The fees you are being charged are for student field trips, presentations, and enhanced options. These fees have been applied to your child's account in PowerSchool to enable you to pay online with a debit card or credit card. This also give you the choice to make payments by selecting the "Create Payment Plan" option. However, if you wish to pay by cash or cheque, please send it to the school office (make cheques payable to Elk Island Catholic Schools). If you have other questions or require assistance with the online payment, please contact our school at 780-998-7777. If you are experiencing financial hardship please review the fee waiver here or contact the principal, Mrs. Bonnie-Lynne Boehm, to discuss support.

SCHOOL COUNCIL NEWS:
Fort Saskatchewan Schools' Playgrounds and Outdoor Spaces: Monday, Nov. 26th
Playground Meeting Notes: October 18, 2018
People plus 2 admin and 1 trustee in attendance:

Quorum was not reached for the meeting but notes have been taken as such:
Overview of situation given by DonaMarie Lukie (current President of the Pope John XXIII
Playground Society). Most in need is St. JP2.
Tear up half of parking lot and where ball diamond was is to become the playground.
OLA is second. Playground is outdated and far from the school. As OLA Is set up to be a
replacement school, we will address a more mobile playground. Mme. Gravelle discussed that the green space has worked appropriately for now.
SAB has no outdoor gathering spaces of any kind. Looking at natural rocks, picnic tables, park benches for Health breaks. SJXIII...there is a rope broken on the “christmas tree”. $40K assessed for replacement as to fix it was more expensive. It was removed from the City of Fort Saskatchewan in the July. Currently looking for tarmac space that hasn’t been destroyed by all the movement of the portables. There was a Pope John XXIII Parent Society created in 2012/2013. It has not housed any significant funds since then. Currently $40 balance to keep account open. Wanting to see this as a Catholic community Parent Society
We reviewed Administrative Procedure 520 Ethical fundraising and charitable activities in schools. (Reason why we don’t do casinos and bingos).
ICIP Grant application applied for 1Million. We are waiting and praying for that to come in for
approval SOON. It is a time specific grant and we need to have a Society in place in order to
facilitate this grant. One BIG event. Kim Street has been hired as our Grant Writer will be main organizer of a Public fundraiser if the $1 million grant does not come through. Kim and her husband are very involved with large fundraisers with the Stollery Children’s hospital and are no strangers to putting our efforts to work for us but in just ONE LARGE fundraiser..
Letters have been received form the City, EICS Board, MLA, and Mayor supporting the grant
applications. CFEP is another grant we could apply for, but this one comes up in January.
Pam Gravelle shared that an OLA school family has come forward to assisting with the ground work to volunteer their time. That name was shared with DonaMarie.
