The Sailor Signal
Cottage Lake Elementary - November 22, 2020
A Note from Principal Welch
Another Sunday is upon us and it's time to share a weekly update from Cottage Lake. I hope you have enjoyed your weekend thus far and you are gearing up for the week ahead. This week will be a short one, as we only have school Monday-Wednesday. Wednesday will continue with the structure you are accustomed to; full of asynchronous learning. We will return to a full week of learning on Monday, November 30.
During this week, I hope you find time to reflect on all you might be thankful for. I am personally thankful for health, my children and family, working in a career I love, and being part of an amazing school community! I am thankful for all our Cottage Lake students and each of you, as well. Together, we are able to support the greatness in our students. This year, I am even more thankful than before for your support during remote learning and overcoming obstacles with us.
I hope on Thursday and Friday, our students (and staff!) take time away from their computers, relax, play, spend some time outside, and reflect on ways they experience and share kindness with others and share what they are thankful for, despite the pandemic.
I wish you all a fabulous week ahead. If you celebrate Thanksgiving, Happy Thanksgiving.
Jen Welch, Principal
•• SCHOOL NEWS ••
To accompany your progress reports, the district has prepared a letter to help explain this report. Please click on the link below that matches your students. I am sharing the forms this way so teachers do not have to attach them to each email or add them to each mailing.
After you receive the progress reports, if you find you have questions, I ask that you please reach out to your child's teacher. In this progress report, we are stating if your student is on standard or if a particular area or skill is an area of needed growth. Lastly, if your student receives support through Special Education (Learning Center, FSA, Speech, or OT), you will also receive progress reports at this time.
Did you know your child has asynchronous (recorded) lessons for PE and Music each week? These lessons can be found on these respective teacher's Schoology page. Most of the teachers also have a Google Form for the students to complete after these activities so students can get credit for the lesson. If we were in school, students would have PE or Music two times per week, so this provides the same for students. Each classroom has one synchronous (live) and one asynchronous (recorded) lesson each week.
If your student has Mr. Darling as their PE teacher, please feel free to watch this video he created to show you how to access the asynchronous lessons. https://youtu.be/__PJNS9qsIc. If your student has Mrs. Cumberland, Mrs. Hanning, or Mrs. Hoffman for their specialist teacher, the asynchronous lessons can also be found on their Schoology page.
If you have challenges finding the videos, please reach out to your specific PE or Music teacher.
Music Department changes
At this time, Ms. G will transition with Mrs. Hanning both Monday and Tuesday.
Thank you, Ms. Gorordo for sharing your musical talents with our Cottage Lake students. We wish you the very best in your next adventures!

Highly Capable Screening and Assessment
The Accelerated Models and Programs Department is working on the 2020-2021 testing plan for students with highly capable needs.
Students in grades 6 & 7
We plan to begin by remotely administering the NNAT3 to students who were referred for testing or are new to Northshore in grades 6 and 7. Our department will contact the families of these students when we are ready to begin screening their student(s). Questions may be directed to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Students in grades K-5
We are still working on the highly capable screening and assessment schedule for grades K-5. Our department will update families when we can test.

Becoming a volunteer
At Cottage Lake, we have always had a very strong foundation of classroom and PTA volunteers. This year, we are all thinking outside the box and looking for new, creative ways we can welcome volunteers into the remote classrooms. As our classrooms continue to establish routines and systems, teachers will be ready to think about how volunteers could be helpful to them.
To prepare for becoming a volunteer, there are several steps we need you to complete. One important note is that our background check form will need to be updated EACH YEAR! In the past, we have asked for them to be updated every two years, but to keep our information the most up-to-date, this is a shift we are making district-wide.
Please visit this NSD LINK to find all the steps you will need to follow to complete your volunteer paperwork. Please click on the bar that says, "Online Volunteer Application Process" for all the steps that need to be completed.
Thank you for considering becoming a Cottage Lake volunteer!
Does your Cottage Lake Elementary student need a device for online learning? Please use the link below to sign up and sign the waiver. After you submit your form, Mr. Paganini will be in contact with you to set a pick-up time for you. For students in Kindergarten & Grade 1, we are issuing iPads. For students in Grade 2 through Grade 5, we are issuing Chromebooks. Students will keep these devices at home until we return to school.
Meals during remote learning and hybrid learning
Beginning Wednesday, September 9, we are offering free meals for ALL children ages 18 and younger. Students do not need to be enrolled in the Northshore School District to receive meals. This is GREAT news for each of our families; these are your tax dollars at work. I am so pleased this funding has been continued, allowing us to extend these meal services until the end of December.
Please visit our District website for more information about how and when to place your order, times and locations for meal pick-up, pricing, and how to apply for free and reduced-price meals.
