Head Injuries – When should you be concerned?
There is a lot in the news about concussions. The CDC has an excellent web page at https://www.cdc.gov/headsup/index.html that will help you to navigate information about head injuries and concussion. At school, the most common head injury we see is when two children collide and bump heads. This is usually very minor. However as your children get older and begin to participate in sports, news about head injuries may be more pertinent to you. Here are the things that we are most concerned about when an injury occurs at school:
· Was the impact forceful?
· Was the child knocked to the ground?
· Was there any loss of consciousness?
· Does the student seem dazed or not making sense?
· Does the student have loss of memory for the event?
· Physical findings that are not consistent with the norm
A quick examination will reveal if the child is awake, alert, oriented to person, place, time and event, has good memory for recent and distance events and has equal physical reactions such as pupil reaction, grips, and balance, among other things.
In the event of a diagnosed concussion, physicians often recommend academic accommodations. It is important that you coordinate with the school if your child has been diagnosed with concussion. At the beginning of each year you are asked to complete the online health history form. This is a great place to make a notation if your child has previously been diagnosed with concussion. In the “Neuro” section you can click on “Other” and make a note that there was a previous concussion. It helps to indicate a general date (month and year) or age at which it happened. The reason for this is that we now know that the effects of concussion can be cumulative. Our level of caution is heightened if we know there was a previous incident.
We appreciate working with you whenever there is a health concern for your child.
