Job Shadowing Experiences
Allie Richie & Jazmine Faulkner shadow auctioneers. Below is Allie's story......
My name is Allie Richie and I have been a student at Locust Trace for four years now. Throughout my years here, my career has changed. Growing up I knew I wanted to be in the equine industry. Locust Trace has opened my eyes to other opportunities. I have been able to show hogs for three years. I just didn’t want to give up after show season and I wanted to be able to stay in the livestock industry, so I looked into other careers in the industry and talked to different people in the different livestock industries. The biggest one that stuck out to me was auctioneering. I have been looking in to auctioneering for a year almost now. I have had the opportunity to go in the community and job shadow at different places and got to meet some well know people in the auctioneering world.
My first job shadow was at the Bluegrass Stockyards. I got to sit with many different auctioneers that day. I learned that every auctioneer is different in doing their chant and just how they sell and get the crowed hyped up for the sale. Everyone that works at the Stockyards was very helpful to me getting started.
The second job shadow I attended was at ADESA car auction where I had the opportunity to shadow the 2015 world champion Brandon Neely. During my time shadowing that day I got to learn the different ways to sell a car and how hard it can be sometimes to sell a car. Also, he gave me some great advice and told me to don’t give up when I mess up just keep going some people may never notice. That afternoon Brandon had an auction at the Paris Stockyards so he allowed me to go with him and shadow not just him but also the 2017 World champion Brian Curless. I got to sit down with both and learned about how they got started. Brian mentioned that if he didn’t step up and learn to be an auctioneer who would in the future? The amount of people today getting into auctioneering is getting smaller so he learned to auction so he would be the future. Both encouraged me to keep auctioneering because there are very few girls in the auctioneering industry. After we sat down and talked it was time for the auction to start and I had to opportunity to sit with Brian in the stand while he auctioned. I was also given a tour of the back of the Stockyards. I learned how the different pens worked and how they know where the cattle are. I made many connections that day one of them was the Stockyards owner who is supportive of me as a girl wanting to be an auctioneer and the FFA.
*Thank you, Brandon Neely & Brian Curless, for the amazing opportunity*
My third job shadow was at Keeneland. There, I had the chance to talk to the main auctioneers. I watched a couple of the sales and learned how auctioning horses is very different than auctioning livestock or cars.
*Thank you to everyone at Keeneland and to Tracie Willis of Darby Dan for making this awesome experience happen*
