A Note From the Assistant Principals
Dear Akin Families,
Emergencies and disasters can happen at any moment and they usually occur without warning. Akin Elementary and LISD, are committed to providing a safe learning environment for every child and every school. When emergencies do strike, our immediate response and prompt recovery will depend on the levels of preparedness of our faculty, staff and our precious students. It is imperative that all Akin faculty and staff be aware of how to respond to every type of emergency situation and to prepare students for those situations as well. We also believe that parents and our community should be aware of our emergency plans, as they play a very important role in the success of these processes.
LISD requires that we conduct one fire drill per month and one lockdown and shelter in place drill per semester. Akin will be conducting all three drills next week, strictly for practice purposes. We are asking all teachers to prepare their students and to go over safety procedures for the drills prior to their occurrence next week. Drills are conducted to assist students with how to effectively and safely respond to potential emergencies at Akin and to make a note of any changes that may need to be made to our procedures. All subsequent drills will be unannounced, in order to better assess our responses to emergency situations in an authentic way.
I am including some presentations that are geared toward helping students understand the purpose and the roles that their teachers, fellow students and themselves play during drills. Teachers will be utilizing these to prepare students for the drills next week, and we encourage you to do the same.
Thank you so much for your continued support of Akin Elementary, the VERY BEST place to learn and grow!
