News from Eli Terry
A Peek Inside the Week - April 21st, 2023
We had our highest percent of students present each day at 95.47%. It is the third month this year where we've met our goal of 95% (or greater!) of students present.
We had our lowest percent of students considered chronically absent; only 12.74% (or 66 students) have missed 10% or more of the days we've been in school. This is the lowest we've been this school year. Our goal is to get this number below 5%! Kindergarten and Grade 3 currently have the highest number of chronically absent students with 18 in Kindergarten and 17 in Grade 3.
Grade 1 had the highest percent present with 95% but Grade 4 was a very close second with 94%.
And last but not least...We have 13 students who have PERFECT attendance. Of the 133 days we've been in school, they haven't missed one!
As we head into the final stretch of the school year, let's work together to finish the year strong! While the weather may certainly scream summer, there's still lots of learning to be had!
BIG Congratulations To...
Chase Peracchio and Nathan Ottey, who are being awarded one of the very first “Make A Change” mini grants!
The South Windsor Alliance for Families was very impressed with the project that they proposed. They appreciated that these Eli Terry students were proactively looking for ways to support inclusion and respect. They agreed that additional recess equipment, specifically adaptive basketball hoops, were a great way to give more kids the opportunity to play together.
The committee SURPRISED these students with a quick visit to their classrooms this morning to share the wonderful news!
We hope you'll join our ET and larger South Windsor community in congratulating these two big-hearted boys on winning a “Make A Change” mini grant! We are excited to see how the award winners create positive change in our community.
Spring Family Survey
As part of South Windsor’s System for Educator Evaluation and Development, each year parents are asked to complete a survey to measure how families view school and district practices related to school climate. Your responses to the survey will help teachers and administrators measure individual and school-wide goals for maintaining and enhancing a positive school climate. To help set a course for the future of South Windsor, we want to know what you think!
We understand that you are very busy, but would appreciate it if you would take a few minutes to complete a short survey by Monday, May 1, 2023 at 4:00 p.m.
To submit the survey online, please click on the link below. You may use a computer, tablet, or smartphone to access the online survey.
Thank you in advance for sharing your feedback and insight!
PTO "Fun Run" Fundraiser
There is NO FEE to register, so sign your child up now! All students will participate on May 12th!
Mrs. Botticello's class raised the most money for Week #1. Their class was announced this morning and each student received a gift card/free treat certificate donated by a local business.
In addition, Mrs. Botticello's class reached their class goal and have earned an extra recess. Mrs. Carey's class also met their class goal and earned a pajama and flashlight reading day!
See the infographic below for ALL the things last year's Fun Run supported. Remember...this is the PTO's only fundraiser for the year!
Lastly, the Fun Run is looking for volunteers!! If you are interested in volunteering at this event, please visit this link:

**IMPORTANT** Grades 3-5 Testing Schedule
You may be wondering if there is something you can do as a parent to help your child(ren) prepare for this assessment. Please know that everything your child(ren)'s teachers have done this year, and in prior years has prepared them to be successful and show all that they know. There is no need to "cram" for these exams, as your child's performance is a personal reflection of their learning progress/journey. There are however a few tips that will help them feel confident and prepared:
- Eat a good breakfast on test days! Make sure there is plenty of time for your child to eat from different groups of the food pyramid. When your child eats nutritious carbohydrates and vegetables, in particular, they won’t be hungry during their test.
- Get some good sleep! Make sure your children get some quality sleep before their test sessions . Along with your child’s nutrition, their sleep will also affect their performance, as they might feel tired and cranky during their test. To combat this, help them get ready for bed particularly early so that they get their rest!
- Give them a rundown of their schedule! Though their teachers may inform them about their test, reiterate to them about their testing schedule. Alleviate them of their nerves, as this is simply an assessment of what they have learned. Since the SBAC will affect their typical class schedule, it’s good to let your child know about these changes. It is also a good opportunity for you to encourage them to try their hardest on the test so that you as a parent can observe what they learned, and what specific concepts they need to improve on.
If you have any questions about the schedule or the assessment itself, please do not hesitate to reach out to Mr. Kenyon, Mrs. Hammer, or your child's classroom teacher. We are confident our ET students are going to ROCK it!
Headphones for Grades 3-5
We are asking families to send in a pair of headphones for their child(ren). Headphones should be:
- Wired...NOT Bluetooth
- Headphones...NOT earbuds
- Inexpensive...they do not need to be a high-quality pair
Ensuring that students have a working pair of headphones will help them engage with the test content and show all they have learned!
Please reach out to your child's classroom teacher with any questions.
