Unit 5: Momentum and Collisions
(Newton's Third Law of Motion)
Conservation
The total linear momentum of a system of particles not acted upon by external forces is constant in magnitude and direction irrespective of any reactions among the parts of the system.
Inelastic Collision
A collision in which objects collide and some mechanical energy is transformed into heat energy.
Elastic Collision
A collision in which objects collide and bounce apart with no energy loss.
P=M*V
A 8kg brick falls from a construction site traveling at 10 m/s downward
P=M*V
p= 8kg * 10m/s
p= -80 kg m/s
Impulse
A driving or motivation force; an impetus.
Momentum
The quantity of motion of a moving body, measured asa product of its mass and velocity.
I can Identify the Action and Reaction Forces Acting in a System.
Flying Motion of Birds.
Action: The wings push the air down
Reaction: the are is pushing on the wing
