Ranking: UCD has been a part of the UC system since 1905. It was originally called “The Farm School” as it was purchased as an extension of UC Berkeley and was their agricultural program. It is located 20 minutes west of Sacramento and hosts 36,000 undergrad and graduate students combined on over 5,300 acres of land. It is ranked as #1 in the world for veterinary science and #1 in the nation for agriculture. It is also ranked 6th best public institution in the country.
Prospective Students: It has a 41% acceptance rate which has declined since last year as the number of applicants has increased. Even though students only need a 3.0 to apply, the average unweighted GPA of students who apply is 3.72-3.96. SAT scores for students that apply are 1260-1460 combined; ACT total scores range from 28-33. Application window is from 11/1-11/30. Transfer from Community College acceptance is 55%.
Academic Programs: There are four colleges at the school including: Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; Biological Sciences; Engineering; and Letters and Sciences (Liberal Arts/Humanities, Math, and Science) The school has 100+ undergrad majors and 99 graduate school majors. Financial Aid Info for Seniors Considering College Next Year
- US citizens, legal permanent residents, and T visa holders should complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA registration window opened October 1, it is highly recommended to complete the FAFSA now, rather than waiting until the application deadline in March. Go to www.fafsa.gov to apply.
- Students who are undocumented, DACA, U visa holders, or TPS protected status do not apply for the FAFSA, instead they should apply for the CA Dream Act at caldreamact.org
- Foster youth should apply for the FAFSA OR CA Dream Act (depending on their residency status) AND the California Chaffee Grant at chafee.csac.ca.gov
- All Seniors and their families, get help with filling out forms and learning more about the financial aid options at a free Cash for College Workshop. Go to www.cash4college.org to find a workshop near you.
The Domino Affect of 9/11
by Meris Fraser
Two gaping holes lay in New York City that was once filled with two towering buildings known as the twin towers. They resided there until September 11, 2001. 8:46. Domino one. Boom! A plane crashed into the Twin towers and seventeen minutes later a second explosion as another plane hit the other. Another plane crashed into the Pentagon and the fourth into a field in the middle of nowhere. Domino two. From all the events of this day 2,977 people died. Domino three, four five…. What has happened since that day? Security and laws for safety have elevated. We have been in so much war with Iraq and Afghanistan ever since. Hurting soldiers emotionally, physically, and their families. Billions of dollars were lost and spent on clean up, security, and replacements. This is a domino effect. One day and everlasting effects. The domino tips hits and continues down the line. Will this ever stop? Will the pain of the last stop?
