Journey Guiding Questions:
- How can educators use technology to make student thinking "visible"?
- How can educators encourage high levels of cognitive response in classroom activities and projects?
- What is the role of classroom culture in developing students who become responsible for their own thinking and learning?

iPad and Web-based Apps for Formative Assessment
Skitch
Great For:
Basic editing, cropping, labeling, highlighting, blurring (think kid's faces or personal info, license plate).
Example:
Learned Behavior vs. Inherited Traits (Twitter students, Science Journals)
ACTIVITY
Inherited Traits vs. Learned Behaviors
- Create a Skitch with your picture.
- Label characteristics you believe are inherited traits and list learned behaviors you exhibit.
- Be prepared to present to your partner and group.
Pic Collage
Great For:
Making collages of pictures...like it sounds. Nice variety of templates & very simple to use.
Example:
All about me!
(Astros vs. Red Sox)
ACTIVITY
Split into groups of 3:
- Using pic collage add pictures to showcase your favorite sports teams or your dream vacation.
- Try for around 4-6 pictures, objects, etc and be sure to use the text feature to give it a title or more detail.
- Explore the types of photos you can import.
- Be prepared to share!
Popplet
Use this app to make graphic organizers or thinking maps for story pre-writing or just brainstorming ideas. You can even use to draw timelines or to display connecting food-webs and more.
- Very simple to use and includes potential for collaboration.
Example:
- Food chain
- JFK timeline
ACTIVITY
Play with Popplet
Individual or pair activity:
- What skills, competencies, and characteristics should a high school graduate possess? Brainstorm with Popplet.
- Take a screenshot when you are finished.
Thing Link
Once a drawing, picture or collage is already made, use Thing Link to add a layer of interactive objects (links, video, audio, text, etc.) on top of the picture.
Example:
- Vocabulary
- JFK Collage
ACTIVITY
- Use your previous creation from Popplet or Pic Collage and add a layer of interactiveness using video, audio, links, text or more.
