Polish Heritage Association of Michigan City Scholarship
The Polish Heritage Association of Michigan City is offering its seventh annual scholarship/essay contest.
This year’s topic is “What was Haller’s Army (a.k.a. Blue Army) and why was it important?”
Polish-Americans formed an army of 40,000 to fight with the Allies in World War I. After extensive action on the Western Front, Haller’s Blue Army, as it was called, journeyed east to help other Polish forces secure the borders of the newly resurrected Polish state. Their experience is a fascinating part of American immigrant and Polish national history
The competition is open to any high school or college student, regardless of ethnic background, legally residing in Northwest Indiana (Lake, Porter, LaPorte, Starke, St. Joseph Counties). Last year, first and third places were both earned by high school seniors.
We invite all your qualified students to compete for one of three prizes: 1st Place ($1,000), 2nd Place ($500), or 3rd Place ($250). The contest is also an opportunity to develop their thinking and writing skills, to engage in a friendly competition with their peers and to learn about a timely historical event. For some, researching the topic and writing the essay may become a journey of self-discovery.
