Happy New Year!!!

I would like to wish all of our wonderful and supportive parents, families, and guardians a happy, healthy and safe new year!!! As you all may already know, ISTEP+ scores were released on January 6th, and I would like to clarify a couple of things. Some of you may have noticed that your child's individual scores have dropped from what they have normally gotten on past ISTEP+ tests. Our school and many of the schools' scores across the state, have also dropped. Here are some of the reasons scores are lower this year as compared to last year:
1. The state created and PILOTED a brand new, much more rigorous test than in the past. P.S. There will be another new test created by a different vendor this year.
2. There were technology enhanced items on the test that the students were not used to.
3. Special Ed. students had to take the same test as the their peers. (IMAST was no longer an option.)
4. The test was about 12 hours long.
5. The state pushed new Indiana State Standards out only a few months prior to the test. (Teachers are supposed to have 18 months to prepare when given new standards)
6. There were two forms of the test (Form A and Form B). Not all students took the same test.
7. Many questions on the tests were "Pilot" questions and were thrown out.
I trust in the fact that our teachers did not do anything different from the previous year when we were rated an "A" school. The teachers continue to differentiate their instructional strategies based upon the needs of their students. They work very hard each and every day making sure they are using student data to create rigorous standards-based lessons. We want you to know that we do not believe that this test is a true representation of what your child is capable of. In saying this, your child WILL NEVER be defined by this standardized test that the state mandates we give, or the score that they receive. Your child is a little human that learns at their own pace, in their own way and has social, emotional, and academic needs that still have to be met while they are growing and learning here at Culver Elementary School. We promise that we will do our best, with your help, to facilitate your child's overall growth and well being, while they are here. Our goal is to guide them in becoming wonderful, caring and intelligent little citizens. Thank you so much for your understanding and overall support!! If you have any questions, please contact me. :)

Weather Alerts and Notifications/ Notifying the Office when your Child is Sick

As the weather starts to really get chilly and students are beginning to catch the flu bug, there are a few things that we need you to remember:
  • Please make sure that your child leaves the house appropriately dressed for the weather. We still go outside for recess even when it is pretty chilly outside.
  • Do not drop your children off at the front door prior to 7:30. The doors do not get unlocked until the assistant gets there at 7:30.
  • If the weather looks like it may be too treacherous for school, please check WNDU, WSBT, or FOX22 for closings or school delays. WROI and WXVI will also be informed of closings and delays. You may also check Culver Elementary's Facebook Page. (go to the link on this page and "like" our page).
  • If your child is absent please call Karen Sndyer at 574-842-3389 or email her at
  • Also remember if your child has a fever, they have to be 24 hours fever free before they come back to school. You never know when that fever may spike back up!
