In addition, many students across the building have been writing book reviews of various genres and posting them for all to read in the halls. ALICE Emergency Drill Monday March 6th
On Monday, March 6th at 1:15 pm, West Homer Elementary and Fireweed Academy will review our district’s ALICE training with students. ALICE (Alert Lockdown Inform Counter Evacuate) is our districtwide approach for emergency preparedness. The school will be locked at 1:15 pm until the drill is over. If your child has an appointment and needs to be taken out of school, please make arrangements to pick your child up earlier, as we will not let anyone in the building until the drill is over.
There is a fine line between preparing children for emergencies and frightening them. We are very aware of this concern. We encourage you to talk to your child about our school’s safety plan as well as your own family’s safety plan. Together, we hope we can properly prepare all of our children in case of an emergency. If you have further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

A Note from Nurse Laura
March is National Nutrition Month
March is National Nutrition Month and in honor of that, I have included some information about healthy snacks.
Here are the ABC’s of healthy snacking (taken from the eatright.org website)
Plan Ahead. Keep healthy options in sight and junk or unhealthy foods out of site and out of mind.
Be Portion Savvy. Snacks should be small and simple so that they do not replace a meal.
Make it a Combo. The ideal snack is nutritious and provides a combination of nutrients.
Medication Safety
The flu and a variety of illnesses are going around. Cold and flu medication are flying off the shelves. Here are some tips about medication safety:
- Read and follow the labels of the multi-symptom medications. Many of them already have an over-the-counter pain reliever/fever reducer in them. Taking more than one medication with the same active ingredient could result in an overdose and cause harm. Tylenol (acetaminophen) comes to mind….
-Measure carefully. Use the measuring device that comes with the medication
-Ask a pharmacist if you have any medication questions
-Store medications “up and away” from children.
-Properly dispose of unused medication.
-The Poison Control phone number is 1-800-222-1222. Store the number in your phone and put it inside your medicine cabinet. It isn’t easy to think about how to find information when we are worried or scared.
Spring
I don't know what the health education class that looks like yet this year. More information to come once the details are finalized.
Spring break is fast approaching. I hope you have a healthy and wonderful spring break with your family. I hope you get to enjoy the outdoors and have some fun together.
When we come back, it is the final push to the end of the school year. Holy smokes that goes by quickly!
Your school nurse,
Laura
