A Message from the Principal...
Welcome Rising 6th Grade Parents! Moving forward, you will receive our JMS Cougar Newsletters. Please look for upcoming registration dates and middle school transition information.
January remains a favorite month of the school year because students come back from a break energized and excited to learn, not to mention just a little more mature than they were in August. There are so many ways to make learning count when the second semester commences!
JMS sent home Report Cards for the first semester last week. Each student was given the report card during school, so check those backpacks!
We will celebrate our students this week during the 2nd Nine Weeks Academic Awards Assembly. The ceremony will be held on Monday, January 9th at 5:30 PM in the JMS Cafeteria. Students will be recognized for Perfect Attendance, Honor Roll, and we will name the STAR students for the grading cycle. If your child will be recognized, you should have received an invitation via email and the Talking Points app.
Course Selection time of year is almost upon us. As 8th graders prepare to enter high school, many of you might be wondering about what kind of courses your Future Freshman will want to take. JHS has kindly created a spreadsheet that explains the differences Advance Placement, ACC Dual Credit, and UT OnRamps. This spreadsheet can help you decide which courses to sign up for when the time comes.
Did you know that our Cougar Curriculum has a dedicated section for parent resources? The Parent Partnership page has links and downloads to support our families with everything from phonics to college credit options. We've also included resources to support our Spanish-speaking families. We would love to hear from you if you have questions.
Also, if your student has been practicing for UIL Academic Events, then s/he will be participating in upcoming UIL meets. UIL Academics is a great way to get kids involved in extracurricular activities at our campus. In fact, The University Interscholastic League offers the most comprehensive program of academic competition in the nation! We can't wait to see how great our Cougars perform at the meets!

January Virtue:
Respect … Act with thoughtfulness
Part of the spring semester is thinking ahead to next year and picking out next year’s classes. Our 8th graders will complete their Individual Career and Academic Plan (or ICAP).
This time of year is a great time for conversations. Some things that you can do to help your teens and tweens prepare for this process
- Identify their goals for after high school graduation.
- Encourage them to push themselves beyond their comfort zone in areas of strength.
- Explore their interests.
- Know their limitations.
JISD Virtues for January: Respect
Respect contributes to a positive culture.
Respect decreases conflict.
Respect encourages empathy.
This Week in SPORTS
Our Girls Basketball team played against Lago Vista Middle School this week.
The 7th Grade B team lost a close game 27-19. The whole team was aggressive and never backed down. Stand out players were Haylee Rodriguez leading the team on offense and Bre Morelock had multiple steals.
The 7th grade A team WON big 43-18. The whole team was effective in pressing against Lago Vista and was aggressive offensively. Karis Brown was offensive player of the game with 22 points!
The 8th Grade B won 36-35 in overtime! The whole team worked together and fought hard to pull out the win. Stand out player was Jasmine Jones with 15 points; Zoey Hansen, Kayla Clemons, and Hayley Alford were stellar in defense, playing aggressively the whole game.
The 8th Grade A team also won 42-27. Crislyn Anthony was the player of the game this week.
The Lady Cougars will play in Marble Falls next week (1/12)!
Our Boys Basketball teams played in Lago Vista this week. Also, there will be a home Girls Basketball Tournament at JMS this Saturday from 8-12.
7th grade B;
The team came out slow at the start with both teams scoring only 2 points in the first 5 minutes. Kole Nolan was able to put up the first points for the game with Felix Drewery, Owen Green, Liam Lazzaretto also putting up points. Syl'Vion Washington drew two technical fouls which helped the team but they were not able to pull off the win.
8th Grade B:
Our 8th grade B team had a great game against Lago Vista. They started the game strong, scoring quickly against the Vikings. They were led offensively by Julian and Ednuel. Defensively, Nathaniel controlled the paint and was cleaning up the boards, grabbing every rebound that came his way. The Cougars put the game away by scoring 14 points in the 4th quarter to defeat the Lago Vista Vikings.
7th Grade A:
The boys had a slow start to the game, giving Lago Vista an early advantage. Joey Gomes, Carson Hinojosa, and Jace Miller had exceptional games to help Jarrell close up the lead. Unfortunately, the Vikings early run was too much to overcome and, while the boys showed no quit, the game ended in a loss.
Join the Cougars as they play Marble Falls this Thursday (1/12) here at home!
