Welcome!
Your plans may include employment, military service, apprenticeships, college, technical training or a gap year. No matter what you choose, your school counselor wants to support you through this process through meetings, newsletters and videos.
11th Grade Meetings
Students who participated in their meetings received a shared google doc from their counselor with notes from the meeting, links to resources, and next steps to take. Please retain this document so you can use it as a reference.
Your school counselor has invited you to schedule a follow-up visit this spring to discuss your progress in your career and college search. In that meeting your counselor can answer questions and help you explore options. We can also discuss summer opportunities such as taking a local college class or participating in a summer program.
Ways to Search for Careers and Colleges
There are so many resources for career and college searching online. Here are a few to get you started.
- Conduct a career search in Naviance using the Interest Profile and explore interviews in Roadtrip Nation. Here is how to access Naviance.
- Explore careers on ONet, the national occupation database
- Search for colleges using the Naviance Super Match tool, then try a search through another search tool such as CollegeBoard Big Future
- Set up a college visit in person or explore some virtual options. Take a look at UMass Boston's website to see an example of different types of options.
- Over 100 virtual walking/driving campus tours: https://artofcollege.org/

Choosing a Major
Two-year schools will require you to know your major since you have limited time to complete your program. Most technical schools will also require students to choose a course of study, since programs are focused on a particular career.
Career assessments such as Naviance's Career Interest Profiler can help you narrow down your career interests and choose possible majors. You can use this tool or other career aptitude and personality tests to hone in on your interests and match them with potential careers as you approach 12th grade. https://teambuilding.com/blog/career-tests
Some students will have a clear idea of their future plans, while others may have a variety of interests in mind. If that sounds like you, you may want to look at liberal arts colleges that encourage more exploration.
Connect with your school counselor if you have questions about what type of school may fit you best, how to choose a major, resources you can use to make that choice, and whether a gap year or other post-secondary option might work best for you. And remember, you don't have to have it all figured out, many students change their majors along the way, but we are here to help you if you'd like to explore this area more!
VSAC College and Career Pathways Event in March
This is an offering of workshops for 10th & 11th grade students and families on topics that range from how to pay for college, how to search for careers, short term training options, virtual college visits, how to search for scholarships and much more.
