Mrs. Turley's Tidbits
Week of 12/5 - 12/9
Here Comes the Snow and the Cold!
Fundations:
We started Unit 7 this week. We learned about the "open syllable" which has only one vowel and it does not have a consonant after it: examples - go, flu, we, I. While we're studying Open Syllables, we practiced "y" as a vowel. It can have a long e sound as in baby or a long i sound as in why.
Literacy:
We are working on our comprehension and fluency this week using books with a holiday theme. We started the week with the story Julius about a pet pig. The students enjoyed reading this story and working on reality/fantasy, text-to-self connections, and identifying verbs. We finished the week with the wonderful book The Puppy Who Wanted a Boy. As we have a class set of this book, we hope you enjoyed reading it with your child as much as they enjoyed it here at school. They worked on main idea, sequencing, and contractions with this text.
Math:
This is a "buffer" week for us in Math. We used our math lessons to review telling time, writing the time, and increasing our fact fluency.
Writing Workshop:
Lots of great writing has been going on this week in our room. Many students have completed their first Information Piece and wrote an "All About the Author" page and made covers for their books. Some students have even started a second book! We have an amazing group of experts in Room 1 and our Nonfiction Class Library will be full of educational books.
Junior Achievement:
It was our third lesson and it was time to learn about jobs in the communities, wages, and the DREADED taxes! Students were so excited to earn $5.00 in JA money but when they had to pay back $2.00 their moans and groans were hilarious!
5th Grade Buddies:
We met with our buddies to write letters to wounded soldiers at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C. We hope our letters will bring some holiday cheer to these American heroes.
S.T.E.M.:
This week with Mrs. Love we read the story The Gingerbread Baby. We then planned and made a house for the Gingerbread Baby.
We had an exploration session with Mrs. Zriny on Friday. We had to put on an "engineer's hat" and think, design, collaborate, problem-solve, and implement a device to launch a pig. The students DID explore all the various components of STEM!
Ria used her Teach for Turley Pass this week.
And then she "hired" Ty to lead the Fundations Sounds Drill.
