Literacy Academy - Conventional Literacy for Students with Moderate to Significant Disabilities
Series: August 7-11, 2017
This week-long intensive course focuses on conventional literacy instruction for students with moderate to significant disabilities. Participants will learn how to provide daily comprehensive literacy instruction including word work, self-directed reading, guided reading and writing. Appropriate assessments including the Whole to Part will be shared.
Writing Growth and Progress: Basics and Beyond
Beyond Sessions: September 27, 2017 and/or October 20, 2017
Presenters: Dr. Gary Troia and Dr. Janet Sturm
Dr. Janet Sturm and Dr. Gary Troia bring research on writing development and strategies across the age span (preschool-12th grade) to all teachers of writing. Learn evidence-based instructional practices, specialized instruction for intervention, and specialized core instruction for students with IEPs taught to alternate standards.
Teaching AAC and Language: Foundational Training
Workshop: August 3, 2017

This is a one-day foundational learning opportunity for educators supporting the communication skills of students with complex communication needs who require Augmentative/Alternative Communication (AAC). The focus is building shared knowledge in AAC and language, topics include: Communication Mindset, Core Vocabulary, Aided Language Input, Vocabulary Instruction and Communication Opportunities.
Teaching AAC and Language: Implementation Support Webinar Series
Dates: September 26, November 8, December 14, 2017, January 23, March 7, and April 26, 2018 (4:15-5:15pm)

This virtual series will focus on increasing implementation skills for professionals who are using a Core Vocabulary approach to AAC. This is an opportunity for you to grow in your skills and connect with others throughout the county. Participants should have previously attended a Teaching AAC and Language Foundational training.

MATH: Specially Designed Instruction (SDI) - Conventional Learners
1 DAY COURSE (Choose one date if most of your students are at the functional or supported levels for the alternate assessment)
Summer option: August 3, 2017 8am - 3pm Oakland Schools
School year option: October 24, 2017 8am - 3pm Oakland Schools
1 DAY COURSE for Emergent Learners (Choose one date if most of your students are at the participation level for the alternate assessment)
November 1, 2017 8am - 3pm Oakland Schools
March 15, 2018 8am - 3pm Oakland Schools
Participants will engage in mathematical tasks, collaborative lesson and assessment planning for Conventional math students with disabilities who take the alternate assessment (Functional/Supported levels). Routines and classroom ready resources will be shared. Please see our other SDI math course for Emergent learners in November or March if your students have complex, moderate, or severe disabilities. This course compliments the Math Trajectories for Alternate Assessment and Math Foundations courses but any special educator seeking to enhance mathematics instruction for their students may participate. Teachers will receive math manipulatives, classroom ready materials and may be eligible for a stipend. Register through the Oakland Schools Professional Development page.
