Roadrunner Review
March 2017 Principal Newsletter by Erika Krohn
Principal's Message
Happy March! We have a busy month ahead of us. We fondly have coined it March Madness around here.
On March 1, we greeted many new families on to our campus for Kindergarten Registration. I am proud to welcome new families to our outstanding school. I highlighted the following items with them:
- Our gorgeous, well-maintained campus
- How we meet the needs of all learners-from struggling to advanced
- Our many educational enrichment opportunities such as curriculum related assemblies, field trips, technology, Science Olympiad, Robotics Team, Academic Pentathlon, Track Team, after-school offerings such as clay, chess, and performing arts, and more!
We could not achieve all of the above without our award winning custodian, dedicated teachers and staff, and most of all-a generous and supportive PTA! Our new families seem excited to join us! If you have friends or neighbors who have kindergarten age children-remind them to come register.
Also in March, we had a great week of celebrating Read Across America and Dr. Seuss's birthday. A big thank you to our outstanding librarian, Mrs. Simkin, all of her Little Librarians, and Speedy, our roadrunner, for contributing to the week's events.
Second trimester is quickly coming to an end. The staff and I have met at our 2nd Collaborative Academic Support Team meetings to discuss students' progress and brainstorm additional interventions and accommodations if necessary. The 2nd trimester grade books will be closing soon. The trimester will end with a minimum day on Tuesday, March 14.
Thank you to all of the families who have contributed to our first PTA Colorathon! I'm looking forward to getting some exercise and being doused with color dust on March 24! Congratulations to the classroom winners of participation and donations: Mrs. Augustine, Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. De La Cruz, and and Mrs. Haitbrink. Speedy paid a visit to these classrooms to applaud their hard work and hand out some prizes.
We will close out March with a celebration of learning at Open House which will take place on Tuesday, March 28. In addition to your child touring you around his/her classroom, PTA will be announcing Honorary Service Award winners. I hope to see you all there!
Please see below for a complete listing of March events because there are even more than I've noted in this letter. It continues to be a productive, enriching year of learning here at Canyon Rim!
Sincerely,
Erika Krohn, Principal

Next Generation Science Standards
"...learning about science and engineering involves integration of the knowledge of scientific explanations and the practices needed to engage in scientific inquiry and engineering design. Thus the framework seeks to illustrate how knowledge and practice must be intertwined in designing learning experiences in K-12 science eduation."
The NGSS are designed to prepare students for college, career, and citizenship. Canyon Rim teachers are working hard to make the instructional shifts necessary to bring the NGSS to life.
