Lucky’s Library (or @luckys_library)
The Birthday Book program is back!
The birthday book program is an optional way for families to honor their student’s birthday by donating a book to the school library. A special label will go in the book with their name and the book will be read aloud to their class. This is a great way to celebrate a birthday while helping grow our school library.
Books that the library needs can be found on an Amazon wish list – http://a.co/5dHON6X or you may contact Mrs. LeSueur at alesueur@wcpss.net
What's Going on in Art?
Dear Families,
Just a quick art room update. Thank you to all the families who have been bringing in baby wipes, white paper, and any other of the wish list items! I really, really appreciate it, and so do the kids.
Recently, I receive a very generous donation from a track 4 family (Cassell Family) who provided us with some fresh scrapbooking paper and wonderful stamps and decorative hole- punchers that are being currently used in the art room. The students are thrilled about these items- especially the stamps that have become part of the “Free Art” area!
I am currently selecting artwork for the upcoming NC State Fair, and your child will be notified if their work has been chosen. Even if your child’s artwork is not chosen, definitely check out the variety of school, amateur, and professional artwork on display at the Kerr Scott Building during the State Fair weeks.
Here is what your child is learning: It’s all about Lines!
Kindergarten- Students are making learning about using lines: vertical, horizontal, zig-zags, etc. Students have created their versions of a Navajo Rug and a Vertical/Horizontal Forest Collage. The focus is learning about line, practicing, fine motor skills, and using a variety of materials (scissors, glue, pencils, markers, paper, etc.)
1st grade- Students are finishing a City Scene drawing with different types of media. They are very fun and colorful. Line variety, overlapping, and mixed media is being discussed.
2nd grade- Students are using various types of lines to draw their own castles. They are focusing on architecture and symmetry, as well as outlining to give their coloring emphasis.
3rd grade- Students are creating a sense of mood in their landscape pictures. They are using oil pastel to color their landscapes. They are focusing on paper coverage, and how to show a mood and a type of weather by using line and color.
4th grade- Students are finishing an abstract water color and oil pastel resist painting. They learned about the artist, Kandinsky. Currently they are working on sketching their shoe with contour lines, and later, more detail and realism.
5th grade- Students are learning about the artist, Matisse. Using the elements of line and shape, they are creating their own collaged room with a focus on balancing pattern/solids and organic/ geometric shapes. These projects are looking so unique!
Artfully Yours,
Mrs. Laura Binnick

District Message ~ Revised Student Report Card
September 2018
Dear Parents of WCPSS Elementary Students,
We wanted to make you aware that the Wake County Public School System has revised the Elementary report cards for grades K-5. The revisions accommodate the new North Carolina English Language Arts (ELA) and Math standards that are being implemented with the 2018-19 school year. The look and format of the report card remain the same with only a few changes.
Students will continue to receive quarterly grades to reflect their progress towards the standards using a rating scale of 1-4. One notable change is that students will no longer receive an overall English Language Arts (ELA) or Mathematics grade. Instead students will receive a grade each quarter that reflects their performance in each of the four strands of ELA. The four ELA strands are Language, Reading, Speaking & Listening, and Writing.
In Math, students will receive a grade each quarter that reflects their performance in each of the four-five domains for Math. The Math domains include Counting & Cardinality, Operations & Algebraic Thinking, Number & Operations, Geometry, and Measurement & Data. The report card changes will provide a more accurate picture of student’s performance in English Language Arts and Mathematics.
The report card will continue to be distributed quarterly to parents. Parents/guardians are free to request a conference with their child’s teacher to gather more information on how their child is performing.
Please reach out to your child’s teacher should you have additional questions.
Nicole Priestly,
Senior Director of Elementary Programs

Counselors' Corner October 2018
October is National Bully Prevention Month. Throughout the month we will be discussing bully prevention at school and encouraging the Laurel Park community to work together to put a stop to bullying. Each week, our students will be learning about specific things they can do to help prevent bullying such as making new friends, including others, and using their words to build others up. Please take some time to talk to your child about what they are learning this month!
On Wednesday, October 24 we will be celebrating Unity Day by wearing orange. Unity Day is a specific day for coming together as a community to raise awareness about the importance of treating others with kindness and respect. Wear your brightest orange outfit that day to show your support and stand up against bullying!
