Our Vision and Mission
MISSION: Instilling values and providing opportunities that empower learners for lifelong success.
At DLB, we value respect, responsibility, honesty, accountability, teamwork, and empathy.
From the office
From Mr. Bachmeier (Superintendent)
Happy 2023! I cannot believe that February is upon us. When looking at the calendar we are now beginning the downward slope to our school year. As a school leader I do feel our best work is still in front of us with many exciting things to come.
This is the time of year when extra-curricular activities are extremely fun to be part of in our district. We have the nearing of the state wrestling tournaments, district tournaments in girls’ and boys’ basketball, as well as playoff time for our girl’s hockey co-op. These students have been working so diligently and to witness their successes is one of the best parts of winter.
In February we have a tradition here at the high school for an annual event called Snow Fun Day. During this day we have an array of activities for the students, from jigsaw puzzles, volleyball tournaments, dodgeball tournaments, bean bag toss, scavenger hunts, board games, video games, and movies that the students take part in. We also use it as a time for students to catch up on any missing work that they might have. Students look forward to this day as it is a break from the regular routine of school. This day would also be an advantage to students that need extra help as teachers are available for one-on-one assistance. I look forward to this day as it is one that I believe lifts staff and students morale, as well as giving students the opportunity to interact on different levels with one another and staff.
As I look ahead to the future months, I must pass along that we are in the dead of winter now and the cold is here to stay. Unless there is a winter advisory or wind chill warning, our elementary students will be heading outside for recess, and they must be dressed appropriately for the cold. Dressing warmly is also very important for those students who are waiting outside for the buses, as the temperatures seems to be the coldest during that time.
This month’s quote comes from Mahatma Gandhi, “You may never know what results come of your actions, but if you do nothing, there will be no results.” We speak of this in the classroom often when learning new material or performing a new task. Giving your best effort will lead to positive results and progress in not only your education, but also in your life when you leave here.
Have a great month!

Pie a Whole School Read
The book Pie by Sarah Weeks was introduced at the assembly on Friday, January 27th by the student council who did a skit to introduce the book. The book was sent home on Friday along with a calendar of pages to read and activities to do as a family. If we get 80% of calendars back with a signature by March 2, Mr. Bachmeier, Mr. Brown and myself will get a pie to the face! That means we need 189 signed calendars back to get messy!
Each day after a chapter has been read, there is whole school trivia where each classroom brings their answers down to the office and they are logged on a running score sheet. There will also be an activity each week that classrooms do together. The first activity is an art project, followed by a comic, then a survey and last pie in a cup!
Congratulations Star Lakers!
The characteristic on focus for the month of January was honesty. Teachers, paras, and staff chose two students from each grade level for showing the characteristic and having other good student qualities. The students who were chosen for Star Laker were - Finley O. (K); Logan S. (K); Stella K. (1); Melanie H. (1); Hope A. (2); Hanna O. (2); Avery C. (3); Addison S. (3); Brayden K. (4); Claire U. (4); Riley B. (5); Presley N. (5); Wesley K. (6); and Delila C. (6). Congratulations to January Star Lakers!
100th Day!
The 100th day was celebrated by grades K-2 on Wednesday, February 1st! The classrooms had different activities that they did together. Some activities included a PJ day because it's tiring going to school for 100 days, dressing up like you're 100, bringing 100 things to share with others, and doing many other activities that involved counting to 100!
Fun Fact: on the 100th day of school, 5th grade students have went to school for 1,000 days! They will be celebrating 1,000 days on Friday, February 3!
Donut Date Day!
On February 14, students at Des Lacs Burlington Elementary are able to invite one or two special guest(s) to school for a donut date. Times vary per grade level and are shown below. Special guests can include parents, grandparents, or special friends. Guests will come for a donut, and visit their student's classroom. A big thank you to United Community Bank for their donation to pay for donuts!

NED Show
On February 16th, students will be participating in a live-stream all school event called NED's Mindset Mission. NED’s Mindset Mission is a positive behavior program. An engaging performer will take our students on an interactive educational journey filled with storytelling, illusions, yo-yo tricks and humor. NED’s message and memorable friends inspire students, promote academic achievement, and support our school goals. Be on the lookout for a family letter coming home with your child next week.
Random Acts of Kindness Week 2023
Students will be participating in school-wide Kindness Week activities from February 13th–16th. There will be themed dress-up days, students will be challenged to show kindness to others in our school.
Preschool through first grade students will have a daily challenge to be completed by the end of the day. Ask your child what act of kindness they did that day and how it feels to be kind to others. Challenges include - giving someone a compliment, inviting a new friend to play, drawing or coloring a picture for 3 different people, using all your manners today.
In second through sixth grade, each student will draw a classmate’s name. They will make a plan to decide what kind acts they will do each day for their classmate. Ask your child what kind acts they are choosing to do for their classmate. Help them plan out ideas if needed and ask them how it felt once they completed them.
From Mrs. Schaefer (7-12 Counselor)

Engagement Survey
We want to share with you an important opportunity for your child(ren) to impact and improve their school culture and learning environment. Student engagement is an important predictor of student success. North Dakota is committed to understanding, through the voice of students, how we can best support their engagement and success in learning. Students in grades 3 through 12 will have the opportunity to share information about their educational experiences and perspectives through the statewide Student Engagement Survey in mid-February. This survey is not a test. There are no correct or incorrect answers.
Participating in the survey provides your student(s) an opportunity to have a voice in their education. We take student privacy seriously therefore the data collected and analyzed will be at the school level. Individual student results will not be reported.
Summary feedback across all students will be provided to teachers and leaders in order to support professional development and continuous improvement at your school and district. Statewide student survey results will also be used by the state to report school quality as part of the state’s accountability system.
The survey has 21 brief questions. The collective responses of all participating students will help schools learn what they do well and what they can do better to help all students succeed.
We look forward to your child(ren) participating in the 2022-23 Student Engagement Survey. the survey will be administered before February 16. If you have any questions about this survey, please contact the school.
The ND Insights page provides information about the survey (and much more) for all schools in North Dakota.

National Honor Society
DLBNHS is sponsoring a Food Drive through the month of February. The food will be donated to the Lord'S Pantry. Food items in greatest need include canned soup, canned vegetables, canned fruit in juice, boxed cereal, peanut butter, and jelly. Monetary donations are also appreciated.
Laker Time groups are having a competition to see which group can donate the most food items by February 28.
We'd love to receive donations at the HS for this important cause. We learned that February is a month with fewer food donations.
Contact Advisor, Mary Eldredge Sandbo if you have questions.
