Second Grade Happenings

Good Afternoon!

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. We have a short week ahead of us, but one that is jammed packed with activities and learning!

last week I sent home the information for the Chindogu project. This project is to be completed at home, and brought in on November 30th. I told the students that this is a simple project, and one that is not too elaborate! PLEASE do not run to the store and buy anything new to make the Chindogu. As a class we discussed that this project needs to be

centered around school supplies, and something that will be useful at school. Some ideas we discussed were G Buck holders, pencil and crayon holders, desk organizers, etc. Thank you for your help and support with this project.

Grandparents Day is coming soon! We are excited to welcome grandparents (and special guests for those students who are unable to bring a grandparent) on Tuesday, November 21st. Each grade level will host a special activity according to the schedule below:

4th Grade: 8:45-10:00 a.m.

5th Grade: 10:00-10:45 a.m.

3rd Grade- 10:50- 11:30 a.m.

1st Grade- 11:40-12:10 p.m.

2nd Grade: 12:00-12:45 p.m.

Kindergarten- 1:00 or 1:45 p.m. program.

2nd Grade eats lunch 1st, and then goes to recess. Please help your child and let their Special Person know that they may go to lunch, and may visit the Hospitality Room while their grandchild is at recess, or take them to the book fair. We will start our Grandparents Day when we come in from recess.

Below I have attached a letter about Canvas, and how to sign into canvas for our class. Please take a moment to sign into canvas for our class, as I will post assignments, the newsletter, homework for the week, and various announcements in Canvas moving forward.


Dear Parents,

At the beginning of last school year, Carmel Clay Schools rolled out a district-wide online learning management system (LMS) called Canvas. Canvas is designed to deliver and display course content, assignments, and resources for students. Each classroom teacher who uses Canvas can customize the experience to best meet his/her instructional needs. Describe how you plan to use Canvas in your classroom here.


As a parent you will also have the ability to access your child’s Canvas content by creating an Observer account. If you already signed up for an Observer account last year, you will not need to sign up again. Once you sign in to your account, you will be able to see your child in his/her new courses. If you have forgotten your password information, you can visit https://carmel.instructure.com to request that it be sent to you. If you are new to Canvas, you can learn how to set up a Canvas Observer account, along with other helpful information, by visiting our Canvas Parent FAQs or by visiting Getting Started with Canvas for Parents and Guardians public Canvas course (no Canvas login is needed to access these resources).


Once you have set up your account, Canvas can be accessed through any web browser by navigating to https://carmel.instructure.com or by using a mobile app. Apps can be downloaded for free from the Apple iTunes store or from the Google Play store. You can find the app by searching for "Canvas Instructure" or by clicking on the links below:

In Room 5 this week...

Math- Last week our focus as on learning how to use base ten blocks when adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers. We learned how to play a fun game, called Target 50, where the goal was to add and subtract numbers to reach 50. This was homework for Thursday night. This week we will switch our focus a bit, and move into measurement. We will learn how to measure items using inches and centimeters, along with exploring arrays.

Writing- Today in writing we worked on writing procedures for a brand new experiment. In this experiment, we will be constructing catapults, and using them to launch ping pong balls and cotton balls. Students have made their hypothesis, and have amazing ideas as to WHY they think one object will go further than the other. Tomorrow we will spend our time writing letters to our Special Person, and setting up the room, to make them feel welcome!

Reading- In reading this week we will be spending much of our time prepping ourselves and our room for Grandparents Day. Along with that, we will be reading all about Thanksgiving, and many of our customs that go along with this special holiday. When we return from Thanksgiving Break, we will begin Theme 4 in our Reach series, titled, Lend a Hand. Our Big Question for the next four weeks will be "What are ur responsibilities to each other?" This is the perfect time of year to focus on helping others, and collaborating about ways we can help others, and be kind to one another.

Spelling- Due to the short week we will not have spelling next week. The following words are for the week of November 27th. Our words will be from 4.1, and cover the vowel diagraphs ai and at, and multisyllabic words. The following words are the words for this week:
