Lately, Ted Cruz and Donald Trump’s rivalry turned for the worse as their wives became the focus of their insults. The gender problem that is so apparent in Trump may just cause his downfall as it may drive female votes away from the Republicans and onto Hillary Clinton. Trump has always been known for his misogynistic remarks towards a number of female figures. But when he had tweeted an unflattering photo of Ted Cruz’s wife Heidi and his own wife who was a retired model, comparing them, both Republicans and Democrats reacted fiercely negative towards it.
Cruz as expected had condemned the attack on her wife calling Trump a ‘sniveling coward’ and telling him that their spouses and kids are off-bounds.
Trump has long been known for his derogatory remarks against women. Hillary Clinton was in fact, one of the victims of his attacks calling her ‘very shrill’ and mocking her for her lack of stamina and had even took a jab on her and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, for the latter’s extramarital affairs.
In recent months, polls have shown that Trump is slowly sliding away from female voters and his favorability numbers have decreased 10 points since November. His unfavorable numbers in women jumped from 64 percent to 75 percent.
This feud with Ted Cruz began when an anti-Trump super PAC, Make America Awesome, had circulated ads on Facebook showing a 15-year old photo shoot for British GQ featuring a very risqué photograph of Melania Trump. The ad is captioned with “Meet Melania Trump. Your next first lady or you could support Ted Cruz on Tuesday.”
Trump immediately accused Cruz for the advert. He even threatened him via Twitter saying “be careful, Lyin’ Ted, or I will spill the beans on your wife!”
Trump further retaliated by tweeting the unflattering image of Cruz’s wife, Heidi, which came with a lot of condemnation and backlash.
