Sigler Elementary Monday Memo

May 23rd

Own It

Our theme at Sigler Elementary this year is “OWN IT”. These two simple words set the stage for the 2015-2016 school year and serve as a reminder for students, staff and families that regardless of the circumstances, we must “OWN IT”. There can be no excuses. Each student, teacher and family that walks through our doors has a story to share and obstacles to overcome. Our goal is to empower our students, teachers and families to meet these obstacles head on, overcome them, regardless of their size and “OWN IT”!

Let Us "REMIND" You about What is Happening at Sigler Elementary

What I Learned from Twitter This Week...

Do You Follow Sigler Elementary on Twitter? You Should Be!

Finish Strong!

While it may seem like we have several weeks of school remaining, the truth is, we are down to the final eight weeks.

With the school year being compared to a marathon, knowing we must go slow to fast, we must also be able to finish strong. Now is not the time to be folding up our tents and looking forward to next year. Rather, we must expect more now than ever out of ourselves and our students. Our campus goal of language acquisition remains a focus and over the next eight weeks, we can continue to develop language among our students.

Our LIFT team and support staff will be bringing a book with them to planning for the remainder of the year, titled "7 Steps to a Language Rich Interactive Classroom". This book, by John Seidlitz, is full of strategies that can be incorporated tomorrow, many of which you may already be using.

Step #5 focuses on the one thing we know is a challenge for students. Developing vocabulary, recalling vocabulary and using the vocabulary acquired accurately. Visuals and Vocabulary will engage students and increase their vocabulary development. Check out step seven - Structured Reading and Writing Activities

May is Wellness Month at Sigler Elementary

With the school year winding down, it is important now, more than ever to take care of our mind, body and soul. The month of May is Wellness Month at Sigler Elementary. Each week we will have a new challenge for you to participate in. Teachers, students and parents are encouraged to participate. Share your participation on Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #siglerwellness and #siglerlearns.

Week 4 - Sleep

We all need our sleep! Sleep is our body's way of healing and recharging while getting ready for another day of life. Lack of sleep affects us in many ways. It can decrease our productivity & energy, decrease memory, attention and mood. Less sleep increases stress levels which may lead to health issues. Many of our students do not get enough sleep. This week, remind your students that they can help themselves by sleeping. Take a shower or bath before bedtime, avoid all screen time an hour before bed, no caffiene after dinner are great starts.

Teachers will complete a report at the end of the day and put it in Nurse Stacey's box on Friday, May 27th for tracking purposes.

Reminder - The class with the most participation will earn a free draw string sports backpack for each student. The staff member with the most participation will win an new FITBIT.

Week of May 23rd

(Items in Bold - Student Opportunities)

As a staff, we identified peer classroom visits or learning walks as an area we wanted to grow in. Our goal for 2016 is for each staff member to complete three visits or learning walks. These can happen on your time (planning, lunch, counselor, library or while another staff member covers your classroom). If we make it important enough, it will make us better. Read here: Stepping Into Each Other's Classrooms.
