WINTER GREETINGS

Greetings and welcome to our Winter Edition of our E-news. We would like to send our very special thanks to all of our alumni who, by their efforts and their examples, refer others to us. We are now able to reconnect with our alumni via email and social media.

Thank you for the blessedly positive emails that I received which served as an inspiration for me to do more and hopefully become even better at doing my job.

This year is certainly different as many of our traditions have been placed on hold, but it serves as a good reminder that our community is stronger, more resilient, and kinder because of the hard work by so many who made our school a success. My gratitude runs deep to all who sacrificed and dedicated so much to ensure that OLM continues to be the beacon of Catholic education. My hope for the New Year is that we can return to our traditions and celebrations, but not forget the lessons learned from the pandemic and the opportunity for all of us to cherish the most important aspects of life.

Winter break is coming and it's a time for unwinding, contemplation and reconnection with friends and family. And may this coming year bring us new hope, new happiness, new goals, new achievements and a lot of new inspirations on our lives.

Thank you for keeping in touch and for all your support. Please continue to like our Facebook page and postings to see school and alumni updates. https://www.facebook.com/olmbulldogs/.

SISTER MARY CLAIRE MAHER, O.P. - Founding Principal of Our Lady of Mercy School

Big picture
Sister Claire was born Mary Catherine Maher in Iowa on November 15, 1907. Mary Catherine was received into the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael on March 7, 1929 and professed as Sister Mary Claire on March 8, 1930. Over the years, she became renowned as teacher, principal and/or superior in elementary schools and convents in San Leandro, San Francisco, Reno, San Rafael, Daly City, Monterey and San Anselmo.

In September 1955, Sister Claire became the founding Principal of Our Lady of Mercy School in the Westlake District of Daly City. Sister Claire, who had a way of speaking her mind, was asked by Henry Doelger, the builder of the Westlake homes, if she could use some books for the library, she said "No, but you could build me a Convent" and he did. Years later when Monsignor Richard Power, Pastor of Our Lady of Mercy Parish, asked what little thing her sisters might want at the convent, Sister Claire asked for a new wing and a chapel. She got her wish.

Sister Claire established long standing Dominican traditions at the new school. She remained the principal until 1963. Sister Claire returned to OLM on November 4, 2012 to help with the ribbon cutting for the new OLM preschool named in her honor - Sister Claire's Preschool.

The Sister Claire's Preschool was blessed on November 4, 2012. At the ceremony, Sister Claire Maher, O.P., cut the ribbon herself at 104 years old.
